OK .. Here's the deal ... A variation on trivia (no more meets and something to talk about) ... the idea is simple, who came closest to breking a barrier without actually breaking it and then who broke it ... The first two off the top of my head (as in I know the answeres to these two) ...
Men's 5000 - 13:00.00
Men's 4x1 - 38.00
Who almost broke the barriers and who actually did ???

I'll take a stab at the 5000. David Moorcroft went 13:00.41 in 1982, to set the world record. Although I will admit that I don't know if he later broke 13 without breaking the world record. As for the 13 minute barrier I'm almost certain it was Aouita 12:58 at Rome in 1987. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Without looking it up, I sort of thought it was Moses Kiptanui who broke through the 13:00 barrier, but maybe he was the one to break Aouita's record?

Wow ... I didn't have a litle yellow button sayign there were responses ... Sorry guys ... guru was right on both counts ... Moorcroft just missing and then Aouita breaking the barrier !!! That one always stuck in my mind because I liked both guys ... Moorcroft seemed totally British, a very proper guy as opposed to Coe and Ovett (whom I also liked) ... And Aouita just had that attitude ... LOL ... But those are your 13:00.00 guys ...
Any thoughts on the 4x1 ?? Hint - an event held this season is symbolic of one side of the equation ...

Time to cheat... I shoulda figured Steve Williams would enter the equation.
38.03 USA Düsseldorf 3.9.1977
Bill Collins, Steve Riddick, Cliff Wiley, Steve Williams
37.86 USA Helsinki 10.8.1983
Emmit King, Willie Gault, Calvin Smith, Carl Lewis
That answer gets added coolness factor by containing Willie Gault...

Dan you cheated !!!! I like that one for several reasons ... One is because it is the only auto timed record that Steve Williams got credit for ... And while we poo poo the World Cup now, it was serious business for Williams as he was injured before the 76 Olympic Trials and the 77 World Cup was his Global chance for redemption - and he got gold in both the 100 and the 4x1 !!
I also think the 38.03 squad was the perfect relay team ... It wasn't composed of the fastest 4-some available - Williams and Riddick fit the bill but Collins and Wiley did not ... But was "put together" based on each persons abilities - stretch running, finishing ability, turn running, good hands etc ... Collins a great start and turn, Riddick great on the straight, Wiley awesome with the stick and a good turn runner, and Williams the supreme closer !!!!
That first sub 38 squad was the first of many featuring Lewis and Smith who made a great duo on relay teams and were the first sub 10 pair to run together !!!
OK ... Two more ..
How about the 11.00 barrier for women ... And while the 4:00 mile barrier would be easy, how about the 4:00 1500 barrier for women ???
