Sounds reasonable on the surface... my opinion is that there are so many layered structures as to prevent any major (i.e. workable) solution quickly. But I agree with your philosophy.

Now i said it can be done ... I didn't state what the probability is !!!
That's the hard part about this sport ... At least watching it from the outside ... And that is the snails pace at which change happens ... Eeryone is always so protective of their own turf that change is difficult ... Seems as if no one is working on behalf of the good of the sport .. It is always purse strings first ... Ego and turf second ... And then oh yeah how about the sport ....
It's called the trickle down effect ....

Looking forward to the meet tonight, myself. One thing is that this GP Final couldn't have played into the IAAF's hands any better. Sanchez and El G are tied with 116 and El G looks like the hands down winner based on his time, then the 100m occurs, and TM runs away with everything!! I imagine ESPN will really play up that angle. Should make for a continuously hyped, but interesting hour.

I still can't figure out what exactly the World Cup is... I guess these wannabe championships that champions try to skip out on in non-championship years don't sit too well with me... The team idea is nice, but it seems like little more than an extra confined version of the WC or OG with added team scoring and continents in place of nations in a few cases.

If I remember correctly, it was supposed to be a team competition ...
at least I think that was the premise .. They tried to balance out the teams by having the best countries and then adding total continents ... Trying to come up with strong squads ...
Of course that was when there were only 1 Olympics every 4 years ... Now there are World Championships to supplements the Games ... So the luster is off of the World Cup ... But it is track ... And I do wish it were televised of for no other reason than that ..... |

I don't like that it limits it to 1 athlete per event per "country." Or does the overall structure limit it to 8 teams, making for single heat races? If not, it doesn't seem right to have a team event that doesn't also place an emphasis on depth.

I beleive it is 8 teams ... All finals ... No heats ... So not a "championships" by any stretch of hte imagination ...

I agree. I don't know if it's the lack of promotion, my lack of awareness, the nature of the meet, or the time of the year, but something just doesn't click...

Well look at how the season has ended ... You have teh final meet of the Golden League (sort of a championship type thing) ... Followed by the Grand Prix final (sort of oa championship type thing) ... Followed by the World Cup (billed as sort of a championship type thing) ...
Question: how mnay chcmpionshipi type things can one person get excited about in the same season ???

We've asked some pretty tough questions around these parts, but that's actually one of the easier ones to answer... ONE
When you stack championship upon championship (seems we also had US Championships, Commonwealth Championships, and European Championships to get excited about), none of them seem to carry much importance. In fact, they all seem about as significant as any old meet to me.

Quote: | You know, a French reporter came to me last week and told me that the track in Charléty wasn’t that fast, that the previous track record was only 10.02. That made me think a lot. It made me ask myself ‘Well, that wasn’t a fast track, it wasn’t a warm day…what else can I do? What am I really capable of?’ I am conscious that the World Record will be broken one day but in good time. |
What are your thoughts?? The first one that crossed my mind is "then what is Dwain capable of, also".
