True, but there are only 24 hrs in a day, and part of that time has to be spent cheering on Team Guru!! |

Ahhhh ... But one can always be cheering for Team Guru no matter what one is doing !!! Now a Where Are They Now ... THAT would take a llittle work ... Are we talking about asking the question first and then trying to find out .... Or are we talking about sharing current knowledge - which could be limited ????

As Conway says, "Miss a day or two and miss a lot."
Back to the 2000 State Masters T&F meet. The Wife won against no competition but still had to keep from fouling. I think she jumped somewhere around 10 feet. Prior to that her only athletic endeavor was high school basketball.
I see that you guys are sticking to the elites with you favorites. That is understandable but for me my favorites tend to be athletes that may not necessarily be world class. They tend to have something going other than just pure talent. So forgive me for being sentimental but here goes.
For example I tend to be a real fan of that pudgy kid who finishs last in the high school cross country or distance event. It takes talent and hard work to win. But it takes a certain amount of character and pride to keep running when you are in last and everyone else is finished and you still have a lap to go. I make it a point to cheer for those guys just as much as the winners.
Marla Runyan who went from the Paralympics to the Olympics.
Every other athlete who competes in the Paralympics.
Every athlete in the Special Olympics. If you have never volunteered for a Special Olympics make it a point to do so. You have no idea what you are missing.
Walt Stack. I don't know if he ever ran on the track but he ran a ton of road and trail races and he started the Dolphin South End Running Club in San Francisco. He was a unique character. You can go to the DSE web site from Run-Down and read some of the comments about the late Walt.
Bill Rodgers, Ann Trason, Tim Twietmeyer, Gail Devers, Alan Johnson, Marion Jones. All world class in their events and world class personalities.
Maurice Greene. He took a lot of heat for the flag flap at the Olympics. And he showed great grace and maturity in his response.
Ward's Unorthodox Opinion on the subject.  _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Hmm .. I can appreciate that ... I think most tend ot go with the elites as they have longer careers that you can follow and then either become a favortie or not ...
I hvae lots of favorites from watching years of high school track and field ... Just that a lot of them no one would recognize ... Although here in California, there are a lot of high schoolers who go on to greater things ...
For example, I watched Bill Green (one time HS 400 record holder at 45.51) upset Michael Sanford (9.44 in 100yds) in the 100 yd dash at the State Meet !!!
I saw Quincy Watts win back to back 100/200 doubles in the state meet ...
One of my favoarite State Meet moments was watching a young man by the name of Lew Dunn get the last qualifying spot out of the Southern Section ... Then go to the State Meet and upset everyone by winning the whole thing in the 100 meters ...
Another favorite was watching a young James Sanford win the 400 (46.33) then turn around and run the very next race (one girls 400 in between) and attempt to win the 200 !!! Unbelievably he finished 2nd in the race and it took a photo tao verify it !!! One of the greatest stretch 200 finishes i have ever seen under any circumstances !!!
But my favorite all time high school moment was at my own section championships (qualifier for the state meet) my senior year .. One of my team mates and good friend was entered in the 2 mile ... The favorite in the race was 8:59 and my friend was 9:15 ... He told me before the race that "I'm gonna have balls like Pre and if I die so be it!!" With 2 laps to go he started his kick !!! He brought the crowd to its feet and for about 500 yds he looked like he was going to pull the upset of the decade ... But then fatigue set in and one by one they began to real him in ... He ended up finishing 8th in the 27 man field (only 3 going to state) but you would've thought he had won the dang thing .... He was running all over the stadium yelling and screaming "I almost did it .. I had em, I had em .. Just a little bit stronger and I would've had em .. Just wait til next year !!!" I qualified for State in 3 events but HE was my hero !!! I took him to state with me and he stayed in my room and we had a good time ....

Great story
I love a guy that runs with pure heart.
BTW, this months Running Times reports that Marla Runyan is running her first marathon at New York this fall. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Wow
I wonder how she'll do? She's a real inspiration. She's also one of those athletes that has done well the longer the race goes, although the marathon is a pretty big step up from the 3k/5k's she's been running. I don't recall seeing her running many 10k's which is a usual stop on the progression up to the marathon. Have I missed something or has she just not run many 10k's on either the track or the roads? _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

I think she's run some 10's on the road, but nothing on the track. Of course, she only ran around half a dozen 1500's before tackling the 5k... As a friend of mine who is a mid-pack national class runner (made a XC world championship squad and usually places about 6th at nationals on the track) said with regards to Marla moving up to the 5k a few seasons back, "oh great, now I have to run the 10k!"

With all the big names going to Chicago, maybe New York won't be so cluttered. Might be a good place to debut. |

Marla took 5th this year at the Cherry Blossom 10 mile in DC. That race always has world class competition so she is doing well. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |
