"Spectated." Love it! Now there's a word you can really put your mouth around.
Though not as nasty as your XC race, the Texas A and M Marathon (which I won in category) was nasty in it's own way: you had to get off the route and over a swampy area to get to the water stations; the course was pooly (or non) marked so runners were continually lost and: the best part was it passed by the pig farm (peee-ewe-ee) twice.
