I ran across this last night while looking for results from the UW Indoor meet. Nick Symmonds, '06 graduate of Willamette U., finally broke 4:00 for the mile, clocking a 3:56.72. According to the UW site, that is the current world leader.

The area newspaper had a nice little article about him today.

I saw this in the Oregonian. Some debut!! He's training under Gagliano, now. I hope to see him in an Oregon Open meet or two. Maybe even Pre. Definitely serving notice! _________________ Paul

He's supposedly running the 800 next at Boston. It'll be interesting to see if he's got the early season speed to match the mile strength. I've never seen Nick not have an abundance of speed, so I'm thinking it will be pretty impressive.
So far, the move down to Eugene is looking like a good one.

Nick won again in Boston, running 1:48.15. I'd guess that's his 3rd or 4th fastest time, comparing to Outdoor.

The mile probably would have given him a better race...

I saw his Boston 800 (online) but not the UW mile. Where'd you see that?

I think I got confused. It probably was the 800 I was thinking about.  _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

That makes more sense! His surge off the last turn was pretty impressive, but nothing unusal for him. He usually makes moves like that with 150 to go, but the short indoor track really changes strategy.

I wonder what Nick's training has been like this Fall and Winter? Usually it would involve XC, but I could see where that would not be useful anymore. I am curious if Nike fit Nick with Gagliano or if that was Nick's choice. Maybe Nick's HS coach recommended him.
Which has caused me to ponder a bigger question: how do shoe sponsors hook up athletes with coaches? Most athletes have their own coaches, but in special cases like Nick, who broke through at last year's Nationals, what kind of input comes from the 3 different sides, athlete's preference, shoe manufacturer's preference, coaches preference. _________________ Paul

I heard a few different stories last year, but it sounded like Nick was approached by Nike at US Nationals. I'm drawing a blank, however, if that was before or after he had decided to settle in Eugene and train with Gags' group...

Another huge breakthrough today for Nick, winning the 800m at the Pre Classic in 1:44.54 (breaking the meet record), outkicking the best kicker in the world in Borzakovskiy!
Here's a cool picture of Borzo looking over startled at being passed:

Borzakovisky had everyone measured correctly except the guy who had him measured. Get race by Nick as he adjusted his tactics in the race. When Borzakovisky passed him he started to move also.
I was cheering for Borzakovisky though because I love seeing someone going from last to first. Especially when the leaders go out way to fast, 49 was the rabbit at the 400. |

Yeah it was pretty cool you could hear the crowd going pretty nuts as he crossed the line.
The 2 mile certainly lived up to expectations as well _________________ The long run is what puts the tiger in the cat. |

I don't think Nick made any adjustments, actually. He ran it just like he always has, only faster. I've said for the past several years, he can kick with the best in the world. He's finally getting a chance to prove it.
The men's 2-mile and women's 800 were also great races. I thought Mutola was in trouble at the bell lap, but the pack finally strung out on the backstretch and let her through.

When you lay an ambush – like the East Europeans love to do (my native Poles included) – and counter—attack or come from behind, you expose yourself to somebody's else's ambush; and when the ambusher is ambushed, he or she finds it virtually impossible either to notice or fight of the attack.
On the other hand, coming from behind is a very economic strategy in a major championships, since all you need to do is to edge the competition just to qualify to the next round. However, it can backfire in two more ways besides the above—mentioned: either you fall short of qualifying, or possibly, you may have to go through two qualifying heats within a day: in this case the so-called lactic—acid build-up could make you unable to surge at the end – there is, however, an old and legal solution: breath 66.6% mixture of pure oxygen for a couple minutes before each race (Lore of Running, Noakes, MD). _________________ http://vincovitanj.tripod.com/Do_not_be_a_victim1/index.htmlhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u43o595CARQ
