|
|
Paul Tergat the Unofficial & Official Half-Marathon (59:06 & 59:17) & Official Marathon (2:04:55) Best Record holder returned to his best shape in the recent Lisbon Half-Marathon winning the race by 11 seconds in a great time of 59:10 (2nd place Robert Cheruiyot (KEN) in 59:21) on a course which is slightly downhill (40m; although from 2000-2003 it was 69m downhill, so this performance is perhaps intrinsictally better than his 59:06 when the course was 69m downhill)
http://www.iaaf.org/news/Kind=2/newsId=28858.html
Four men went under the mystical One Hour (60:00) barrier in this race, which could bode great depth for future Marathon races.
With this said, could we see (weather permitting) see Tergat finally achieve his full Marathon potential which he has been promising to do since his Marathon debut (2:05:48 finishing 2nd to Kannouchi in '02 LDN Mara)??? _________________ Doubt whom you will, But never yourself.

Four under an hour???
Wasn't the controversy over his 59:06 that the course was a couple meters short? I don't recall anything about it being downhill...

I would guess because the course being slightly downhill would not necessarily cause controversy where as an incorrect measurement would be..
But yeah I seem to remember that issue with the 59:06 that it was slightly short... _________________ The long run is what puts the tiger in the cat. |

In the page above, it only shows a mark next to the 59:06 which shows that it was run on a slightly downhill course (Lisbon)
The controversy, in regards to the course being too short, was when Tergat ran 58:51 at Milano in 1996. Was that along your lines of thinkings guys?

Ah, that's probably the one. I remember he broke the record by a large margin -- on the order of a minute -- and was nicked because the course was a couple seconds short.
