Conway was considerate enough to make me aware of the '05 Golden League info having been posted.
http://www.iaaf.org/news/Kind=512/newsId=28080.html
2005 Dates
Paris Friday, 1 July
Rome Friday, 8 July
Oslo Friday, 29 July
Zürich Friday, 19 August
Brussels Friday, 26 August
Berlin, Sunday, 4 September
2005 Events
There will be seven events for men and five for women:
Men - 100m, 800m, 1500m or Mile, 3000m or 5000m, High Jump, Javelin Throw.
Women – 100m, 800m, 3000m or 5000m, 400m Hurdles, Triple Jump.
That gives us 6 of our 10 meets, with the others to be determined later.
As for events...
Men
100m
800m
1500m/Mile
3000m/5000m
Women
100m
800m
3000m/5000m
We'll probably need to pick up one non-GL event for the men and two for the women, which is always interesting... When we decide what the fill-in meets will be, hopefully they'll have event schedules posted so we can see what the most oft-held non-GL events are.

I don't believe we have a good scoring model for any of them.

Going from memory, women's high jump, men's pole vault, and men's/women's long jump are the only "good" field events we've got.

What does my event bias have to do with anything? There are pages of discussion documenting the difficulty in accurately scoring the other field events, and every GL event on the track is contested each year regardless of distance.

As for adding events, how about the 400 and 100/110 hurdles? _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

110h can work, but the others have no scoring model in place. The scoring is derived from either Purdy equivalents or the decathlon tables (and the latter only works with some of the events), which leaves most of the hurdle and steeple races out in the cold.
One of these days, I'll have to rummage through the original monster thread and make a sticky FAQ thread out of the pertinent posts...

Haven't we had the 400 in the past? _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Do you mean the open 400 or the 400h? The open 400 is fine, as long as it's contested often enough (usually not, if non-GL), but I thought you were referring to the 400h from the way you phrased the previous question.
To clarify, any open running event is fine.

The hardest part is finding events that are contested often enough to make them meaningful ... We always know the "paying" events will be on meet schedules ... But after that it gets shaky ... Sort of the sports way of screwing itself if you ask me ... They promoters are constantly looking for ways to shorten meets instead of giving the paying public their money's worth ... Everyone tries to appease television and not the fan ...
Usually the events that can be counted on are those that provide good match ups ... I would bet, for example that the 110h will be ini a lot of meets ... Especially if Liu is available - and judging from last year he will be ... Which gives you the potential for Liu and Johnson matchups ... Not to mention Trammell and some of the other young guys ... 400h, on the other hand, may not be as frequently run with Sanchez pretty much dominating ... Although if a couple of guys pull it together before June and pose a threat you could see that change .... _________________ Conway

Talk about getting things backward. That's a pretty screwy situation they've created.
If you're right about the 110h, that'll make a good addition for '05. The women's open 400m seems to be getting deeper each year, with a lot of representation from a lot of countries, so it could also fit the bill. Of course, it was hardly contested when non-GL two years ago...

Yeah I think that the 110 Hurdles would be a great event to have in the mix as well as the womens 400m I would guess that Guevara will be back this year with the American, Russian, and Caribbean 400m runners this should be a great event to watch...
If another Womens field event is in with HJ then I would guess PV _________________ The long run is what puts the tiger in the cat. |
