Some random thoughts on the Olympics in general:

Enjoyed the opening ceremonies.

The success of Iraq's soccer team is great.

Paul Hamm's comeback in the all around was great.

Michael Phelps is awesome.

The shot put venue was the best thing so far.

AMAZING!!!!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!

NBC went over their alloted time today to show the ENTIRE 10000 meter race with NO commercial interruptions. And there wasn't even an American in contention after the first mile.

Absolutely amazing.........

I've been out of town working the past 2 days and didn't see any of it...

I saw Paul Hamm's comeback win, and it was indeed impressive. One thing stood out to me, though. First, I had already seen the results before watching it, so I had that advantage on my side... Still, I was shocked by the commentators' quick dismisall of Hamm after the fall and how they went on and on about what he must be thinking and how would he regroup. It was immediately obvious to me that he had already put it behind him and would have no problem moving on. You could just see it in his face.

I was reminded of Leohr's "The New Toughness Training for Sports," where he talks about truly elite athletes' ability to instantly refocus and put everything else behind him. That's the one thing that often separates the top tier from the 2nd tier, with talent being pretty much even.

Well I'm having a real hard time with the coverage ... They focus so much on the negative ... The interviews are almost amateurish ... And if it isn't gold its worthless ...

Have been surprised that they have shown all of the rounds of the women's 100 so far ... But the way they pretend that the world knows nothing about the results of events and races is totally ridiculous ... If it weren't for the fact that they have their own web site, one would think they had never heard of the internet ... Not to mention that everyone that does the news around the world talks about the Games 24/7 ... So why they keep holding everything until "{rime Time" is beyond me .... They could show events live and then put together a Prime Time package ... But to pretend that no one knows anything is about the dumbest thing I've ever seen ....

NBC still thinks it's '96 and they can fake the winner of the women's gymnastics...

What they are faking is their Olympic coverage ...

I wasn't aware of it until this evening, but their hi-def channel is only the previous day's coverage. :t-:

How sad ... I see no reason what so ever why they can't provide more up to date coverage ... The World Power sees everything after the rest of the world !!!!!

I don't want to down-play the whole greatness of the games. But is it me or does it just not feel like the Olympics? I can't quite get into the jibe of things this year.

Now in Sydney 4 years ago, I was hyped 'bout the olympics, and it was truly magical...

Prehaps when the big Track and Field finals happen (it starts with the women's 100m final) I'll feel differently...

No not just you ... Not sure what it is ... But its just not exciting ... I thought maybe it was the way NBC is showing it - their announcers etc ... But maybe not cause I have heard complaints from all over the world ... I'm hoping that the women's 100 semis will signal the true beginning of the Games !!!!

Has any venue seen the stands more than half full yet?

Buttcheek....oops I mean beach volleyball stands have been consistently full. Surprised

Seriously, I've heard the same things about lack of interest but I think there are plenty of interesting and exciting things going on if you look for them. Some I have already mentioned. Others:

Female athletes competing for the first time from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. Performance wise they are aren't too good but just the fact that they are there is superb!!!

Michael Phelps giving up his spot on the last relay to a swimmer who hasn't won a medal yet.

The dominating performances by the US softball team. 7-0 and outscoring their opponents 41-0!!!!!

The changing of the guard in the men's 10K with Geb passing the torch to the young guys and then celebrating with them.

I am having fun looking for the things that interest and excite me and I don't pay much attention to what the journalists say about other's disinterest. Maybe I am just easily amused.

Yeah I noticed that last nite when the Men's 10k was being run. The backstraight, amongst other places were almost empty. Anyway, the Men's 100 qf's are starting now, and the stadium is slowly starting to look more full.

I don't think the attendance during the 10k was too bad, it looked pretty empty from some angles but the home stretch was packed. And you have to remember that it's probably not one of the most spectator friendlt events and it's early in the track competition.

I think the olympic coverage has been pretty good, I just don't like when they do in depth stories on specific athletes or generally do anything besides show the actual sports. I get CBC and NBC, so I have a bit of an advantage in that I can switch between the two when one of them starts showing something stupid. CBC doesn't wait until prime time to show you things, but they tend to say something's live when it actually happened 30-60 minutes ago, which is kind of annoying because I can't help looking at the results on the internet before it's televised.
