Well, unless you're talking about a distance race (which we're not), I always say negative splits can produce a good time, but never the best time you're capable of that day.

Great job, Graeme!!
It almost seems you had a plateau at the 4:08 level but your body was ready for the next breakthrough. Nice that it came in time for the National Juniors. Did you cut your training back some, thus approaching the last race with a decent taper??
Man, I'll bet its going to be a scorcher, temp wise, in Saskatoon!! _________________ Paul

Yeah, I have been cutting back a little bit, especially since I've been racing so much trying to get this time. When one race is three days after the next, it's tough to fit in a work out
Saskatoon is all over the place, on any given day it could be as low as 20, or as high as 35 (the 35 is probably more likely ). Saskatchewan tends to get extremely windy at times too, but hopefully the conditions will be good. I know everyone's in the same boat, but I want a fast time. Prelims are at 8pm on the Friday, and finals, if I make it, are on Sunday but in the middle of the day. Heat usually doesn't bother me too much in the 1500 though... until I finish |

35 (100F) is kinda hot for a 1500... You could incorporate heat training and tapering over the next 2 weeks and just lay out by the pool during the heat of the day.

Okay, here's how it went:
The prelims were extremely tactical and my heat went out really slow. The last 800m was 2:05 give or take and I finished in 4:04 with a last lap of 60 seconds. I was really happy with that, but the final didn't go as well. It went out even slower than the semis, but on the third lap about 6 people took off and I was boxed in so I couldn't go. By the time I managed to get out they had already put quite a bit of distance on me and I couldn't make it up. I was stuck leading the pack that had fallen behind and I don't know if I was tired from leading into the wind, or just didn't care as much anymore, but I didn't have a very good finish and my time was 4:06. I got 8th. It was a little frustrating because on Friday I was feeling good, and the weather was perfect. That was the day to run a PR, but on Sunday (the final) it was 33 degrees and super windy.
It was a good experience though, I've never been in such a competative race. All the qualifying times for the final were within a few seconds... I'm not used to that much depth. Still dissapointing though since I was going for 7 seconds faster in the final. |

Great effort, Graeme. I am not surprised by the weather conditions. Down here it was 90 all last week and 100+ Friday and Saturday. I imagine it was at least a couple of degrees warmer where Dan is at.
You have gotten yourself into a whole lot of varied race situations this Spring and Summer, and those experiences will pay off in the future.
Feel free to take 24 hours off and then start preparing for XC this Fall!!

Ditto on the excellent effort. Those learning experiences suck to have to suffer through, but at least now you know to avoid getting boxed in like that even if it doesn't seem like a dangerous part of the race.
And yes, it was warmer down here... Around 105. Of course, I was up in Portland one of the two super hot days.

That's not bad Graeme. The thing to do with that race is turn it into a learning experience. I predict a great cross country season for you. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Just finished a five day UVIC training camp on Newcastle Island. Newcastle is a small island just off the coast of Nanaimo. It's about 10k around the outside, but there's tons of trails through the middle as well. We camped over there and started making a bit of a transition from just easy mileage build up to some actual running. That went well, I got back yesterday, and today I came over to victoria and moved into res. I've never really had more than two or three people to train with, so this'll be cool. I'm really excited about this cross season. I'll keep you all updated and I think we're gonna be at the Sundodger invitational in Seattle later this month, so that should be my first race. |

Excellent! Do you know if UVIC comes down to the Willamette Invitational? I know UBC has come in the past.

As far as I know, UVic doesn't usually go to the Willamette Invite. I think it's just UBC, and possibly SFU. It would be cool if we did though. When is it? |

It's usually the first or second Saturday in Oct. Yes, Simon Fraser does come down regularly. Dan would have more info. _________________ Paul

Did you by any chance see a flashing street light across the water? I spent the past 10 days in Sechelt (Sunshine Coast), with a clear view of Nanaimo across the way.
I don't recall UVic ever coming down to the invite, but I'm sure I could inquire about an invitation being extended...

Cool, I've been to Sechelt tons of times. My grandparents used to live there. |
