Dedicated to all big runners here!
I have realised from responds to one of my topics, that there are more of us "Sumo sized" runners, who have more ambitions than just run a bit to remain healthy. According to BigFE1965: "Us fat guys need to stick together" and I agree we must! Let me take the opportunity to re-introduce myself including some embarassing facts:
Who I am
I am Peter and turned 50 this year. I live in Munich, Bavaria, Germany.
The motto of my life was "No sports". Only in my youth I was not too bad in sprinting: 100m in 12.5 (with a age of 16). In fact that's something I still love, smashing opponents in the last 200m of a race to become 410th instead of 415th . Then I started to date girls and lost any focus in sports, you know the story .
"Peter, The Athlete Reloaded": 31. December 2001
After a visit to a doctor, after many years he told me the following facts:
108 kg = 240 pounds , I am 172 cm tall = 5.65 ft or 68 inches (I don't know what you use).
He also discovered diabetes II, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. In his opinion he gave me great chances for a heart attack within the next 10 years . I am glad, that we can't store pictures here, I have so embarrassing photos ...
Beside the medicine he advised me: "run for your live", which I took too literal and started running, well more a kind of walking, jogging. I always made sure, that nobody watched me ... My first 4 km took me 42 minutes! To put some more pressure on me I signed for a 10k race in April 2002. After horrible 6 weeks I was able to "run" 10k, time 1:24. Then it became easier and finally finished my first 10k race in 1:00:15.
I lost 10kg = 22 pounds during this period.
"Peter, The Athlete Revolution": 6. January 2003
At this point I became crazy, at least friends say this. I joined a group of ambitious runners, they run at light speed and they offered me to join them in their training. They told me much later, that they expected me to quit after 2 or 3 times. But there is a Peter who can be extremly stubborn, and if the coach yelled at me: " Can't you move your f... a...!" I perform even better ! This 16 months of tough training brought we forward in my 10K times:
December 2002: 56:15
April 2003: 53:28
December 2003: 51:17
April 2004: 49:12
I ran a half marathon in September 2003 in 2:12.
I lost another 18 pounds and I am down now at 200 pounds. Battling on weight loss and eating is the other big challenge I undertake, and I normally loose this fight.
My running licenses
Brooks Beast - soon be retired
Brooks Addiction 5
Asics 2080 - soon be retired
Asics Trail
Puma - Extol *** my fighting machines ***
New Balance - spikes
My goals for next 18 months
Loose the next 20 pounds, run the 10K in 45:00
Run a marathon this year, just to see how it feels.
My dreams
If a genie offered me wishes, one of them would be definetely run 10k in 39:59. But this just a dream, but a pleasant one!
What about you?
I guess you have similar experience? Let's pitty each other!
Regards
Peter |

That is an inspiring story Peter! Congratulations on all you have achieved.
My story starts in 1979 when I was a senior in college and the Air Force recruiter told me I was too heavy to join. I was 5' 9" and 195 pounds. I started running and lost to 185 and then during my years in the Air Force got down to 170. That is when I ran my PR's of 17:52 for 3 miles and 39:12 for 10K.
Over the years though I have let the weight creep up as high as 212. Last year I got it down to 189 but it has now climbed back to 210. Paul, who has successfully dropped a good bit of weight, makes rude comments to me about putting the weight back on. Oh well, I guess I deserve them.
Maybe this will become the fat guy weight loss thread and eventually we can lose the fat guy label. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Thanks Micah, ... but I am not fishing for compliments. What I have realised, there are not such excuses like: I am too old, I am too fat, I am in bad shape, I am not healthy enough, etc. There are always ways to improve your life. I got more control since I arised my bottom from the sofa and went out the door! |

Peter, my reclamation story does not go back as far as yours. I am a teacher/coach from Ohio. In addition my wife and I own a small bar/grill. Wow is that tempting! As a young man I played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. In college I played football (DB at 6'2" and about 210). As a young teacher in 1990 (I am 39) I injured my knee playing in a softball game and had surgery. My eating habits were never great ( and they still really could be much better), and my love of the Anheuser Busch company coupled with six to eight weeks of inactivity left me at about 230.
I slowly seemed to adopt a more sedentary lifestyle. Kids came and time constraints were an excuse to not exercise, although on occasion I would try to get things under control, but nothing seemed to really work. I was placed on blood pressure medicine about 5 years ago, and avoided any cholesterol checks. I think I dropped from about 285-290 to the high 250's about 4 years ago.
Finally this past July while in Toledo I drove past a billboard with a little girl crying and holding a teddy bear. She reminded me a great deal of my 7 year old daughter. On the sign it said "Heart attacks break little hearts!" That moment was life changing. I was a generous 325lbs. At least that is what I wrote down. I was probably a bit more, but with the correct lean I could get it there.
I began to try to exercise. Walk/Jog/Lift/Bike/Gazzelle. On 7/23/03 I got through a mile in 15:14. My goal was a 10:00 mile by the time school began. I did not make it. On 9/2/03 at my doctor's office I was 281 and he was excited. By 9/14 my mile time was 10:04. My cholesterol check came on 10/10 and I was 257. I came through with flying colors a 163, and my good was a remarkable 81. My first race was a Thanksgiving 2 miler, and my 9 year old without training ran a 15:14 I think , and I ran a 18:02. Since then I have stepped it up and will break my PR of 24:26 in the 5K the next race I am in. My training times are beating that pace right now. On my 39th birthday (March 7) I ran a half marathon.
I have kept a journal of all my exercise and everything that I eat or drink (many, many beers). I have a fat and calorie counter book and truly believe in a low fat (relatively speaking) lifestyle.
Although my calories and fat vary from week to week I have been able to lose weight through this plan. I also have an exercise chart printed from www.fitresource.com that tells you how many calories you burn from differernt exercises. I use a resting metabolic rate of weight X 13 to see how many calories are just needed to maintain my current weight. I then calculate what I have taken in for the week and compare that with what I have burned in formal exercise and arrive usually at a deficit. Once I divide the deficit by 3500 I find what I have lost.
It is eery how precise this has been. I recently went back to early January and all the weeks added up to 17+ pounds, and the scale said 18. Last week was a bad week. We were on vacation and ate out quite a bit For the week I averaged 3179 Kc per day with an average of 58 fat grams per day. At 212 lbs. this was actually a surplus of 2961 Kcs. My exercise burned 5998 Kcs and in my calculations I lost .86 lb. It may seem tedious, but it keeps me focused and it is remarkably accurate. It allows me to eat pizza and drink beer because I know by the numbers how to make up for it over the next several days. _________________ 7/10/03 - 325

I also believe and "exercise" in low fat. Keeping a journal, this I do only if the weight goes up again. Although it helped me a lot last year, when I lost 20 pounds in 3 months. Looking at the numbers over the last 2 years everything seems to work fine, but in fact it's a constant battle sometimes you win with a landslide, but normally you loose . Important in such situations is the "tomorrow is another day" method, if I fail today, I will try it again tomorrow!
Peter
PS: My diet consists of loads of vegetables (cooked without or little fat), this suppresses the feeling of being hungry and according to my Polar M51 I burn 5000 kcal in week by running. Yes, that's a benefit the people with a huge frame have! |

Hello everyone my name is Travis. As a cross-country runner in high-school some 15 years ago I was a lean 160 pounds running 5K's in the high 19's. After losing motivation I graduated from high-school at 205 lbs. During my freshman year as a result of extreme anti-socialism infrequent trips to cafeteria I dropped back down to 170 pounds. During my following college years eating double-quarter meals and heavy drinking I graduated from college at 210 lbs. Shortly thereafter I joined the Navy weighing 235 pounds and lost 40 pounds during boot camp. My yo-yo for the next four years and I got out of the Navy three years ago weighing in at 240 pounds. In the next two years I gained 30 more pounds. By chance an aquaintance of mind ask me to join him in a workout plan. I started doing the plan and was hooked to pumping iron. After about 2 1/2 months I had lost 15 pounds. I got and started running. First just running 2 miles and gradually building my self up. Over the next four months (May '03 - Sep '03). I lost 40 pounds. I started running 5k's. In Octiber of '03 I did my first Triathlon. I did another in April of this year. I have a PR of 21:45 in the 5K and 45:31 in the 10K. I am happy with myself. |

Hi Travis,
I am curious, what's your current weight, and how tall are you? Adding up your number it could be 215 ...

40 pounds how did you do it? Any secret, or just hard work and discipline. I guess it comes back to discipline. I am playing in the moment with the idea to smash the 45:00 for 10K (from 49:12) within the next 12 months, well knowing that this means 25 pounds less at least ... I am still not sure if I have the heart for it.

Peter | I'm 6'2 215 I lost the 40 pounds just by being disciplined and sticking to a low cal diet _________________ The highest reward for a person's toil is not what they get for it, but

discipline seems really the only wonder diet, which works ...
Loosing 40 pounds in 4 months is a great success. Did you suffer setbacks in your workouts? I have heard that loosing to fast can mean you loose also muscles, because that's easier to burn than fat.
I wish I had the same discipline!

I have done one sprint triathlon. The transition from bike to run was the hardest. It seemed like I was taking "baby steps" for the first half mile or so after getting off the bike. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |
