Jason Gardener, Shawn Crawford, Gail Devers, Kim Gevaert, to name a few, looked impressive this morning on the first day of action within this year's WIC within the new Indoor arena. Just for the record, the WIC was also held in Budapest in 1989.
My predictions for the medalists for the Men's and Women's 60m finals are:
Men's 60m final;
1. Jason Gardener (GBR), 6.45s
2. Shawn Crawford (USA), 6.48s
3. Asafa Powell (JAM), 6.52s

Women's 60m final;
1. Kim Gevaert (BEL), 7.07s
2. Gail Devers (USA), 7.09s
3. Christine Arron (FRA), 7.10s

Gardener and Devers victorious in 60m finals.

Gail Devers got a great start and won in 7.08s (SR), with Kim Geveart (BEL) claiming the Silver medal in a new national record of 7.12s, with Yuliya Nesterenko (BLR) also finishing in 7.12s claiming the Bronze medal.

Jason Gardener also got a great start in the final, and was leading by about half-a-metre from the field, but with Shawn Crawford breathing down his neck with a blazing last 15-20m, I thought for a moment that Gardener was going to lose on the dip. But Gardener held his nerve, and emerged victorious in 6.49s, with Shawn Crawford finishing in second place claiming the Silver medal in 6.52s with Yeoryios Theodoridis (GRE) finishing in a season's best time of 6.54s to claim the Bronze.
Two great sprints and it's only the first day.

Dan...Conway...anybody else how is the coverage where you are???

If anyone is in the USA, I feel for you, as it is now widely known that the Track and Field events coverage for major International meetings is quite bad (to put it mildly)

Actually we are going to get coverage of the World Indoors !!! Fox Sportsnet is going to show it next weekend ... The affiliate here is going to show it next Saturday at noon !!!!!

Missed everything this morning .... Was out of the office ... Disappointed in several sprinters ... Pognon, and Olufasuba for starters ... And what the heck happened to Powell ??? He was supposed to challenge for gold ... Crawford ran ok ... But his start was obviously horrible and it was just a strength a week ago ... So it looks like he is still hit and miss for the time being ... And his reaction time was horrible which tells me his concentration is still not the best ...

And while Gardener won, if ANYONE had stepped up, he wouldn't have ... So if I were his coach I'd be concerned, cause he still doesn't seem to have an extra gear yet ... And his gold was the result of being the last man standing and running a decent race ...

So goes my opinion ... And no one has heard from Justin in quite some time ...

As a I said, Gardener got a great start and at about 35-40m he was leading by about a yard, but he tightened up terribly. When I was watching the front-view slo-mo of Gardener, he was grimacing like he had an injury. If that was Mo, he would have just opened up and increased his lead comfortably.
If there was another 40m to go, Gardener would have, unfortunately, been hammered by Crawford.

I suppose that just sums up the feelings for the 200m event Indoors.
What ever happened to the times when the elite men were running 20.2-20.4s???

Although the Men's event seems to have gone on a downward spiral, the Women's event seems to have some sprak left. In more recent years, Michelle Glover has ran 22.18s, and Muriel Hurtis, Anastayia Kapachinskaya, and other women are running in the 22.3x-22.7x range.

Jedrusinski is the most lucky SOG that I have ever seen, and so am I, so far. My 200 m prediction may still come true. I think that he planned to run close to 21 flat to get to the semis, and he almost did not get to the semis. However, his job in the semis may be close to impossible, if they are going to use all six lanes.

The American hurdler, Duane Ross is my biggest disappointment so far. He "DNF'ed" -- did not finish in the heats.
My biggest surprise is that Gardener'sbody did not break down before he run in the final.

Urbas, my "maan," did well. He advanced with 20.79. In the semis, he should get poll position. Urbas, urbas, "uber alles" to misqoute, the end of German anthem, that went unsang until a couple years ago. Urbas is from Poland, like I.

Urbas ran 20.79s...that's pretty good for him...can he get close to his Indoor PR which around 20.5x???
If Allyn Condon (GBR) does not get disqualified for false starting as he did last year in the Birmingham WIC Men's 200m final, I believe he could figure in the 200m Men's event, having run 20.64s this year which ranks him about 3rd of or 4th on the World List this year.

In heat 1 lanes 4 to 6 are going to fight for the two spots in the final: Condon Allyn, Urbas Marcin, Batangdon Joseph. In the death heat 2 lane 2, Jedrusinski should not advance (it does not mean that with a lucky "DQ" of another runner, he cannot advance), but should make other runners, Fredericks Frank NAM, Melfort Jimmy FRA, Wissman Johan, Unger Tobias work 'almost' too hard. The heat of sham or heat 3, I view as a joke, whomever is going to advance of this heat is not going to win "gold" or "silver," and if any of them is going to win "bronze," it will be based on shear lock.

3 x 5 semis: lane one is not used.

__"Ross was away okey in his heat, cleared the first hurdle, stumbled on the landing and went head-first in to the second hurdle. He was carried away on a stretcher. He hit his head on the hurdle, seemed to bleed from the head.
He has also a broken right thumb. "
From Pela2 (SWE), I guess either he is there, at the venue, or more likely, the WIC are on EuroSport.
I hope that Ross is OK, he has done me no wrong.

Allen Johnson ran 7.36s in the final!!! A national record equalling and personal record smashing performance for him...
He did give me a scare though in the qualifying rounds although easing through he looked like he just couldn't open up and I became worried but he proved me wrong in the final...

He ran like this last weekend in the US Indoor Championships. AJ ran 7.71s in the heat (finishing in 2nd place), then he ran 7.68s in the Semi-final (finishing in 3rd place), and it looked as though he was having problems and then AJ just exploded in the final running a time of 7.44s winning by 0.15s from Duane Ross who ran 7.59s.

This weekend, AJ ran 7.67s in the heat (finishing in 3rd place), then 7.58s (finishing in 3rd place again, qualifying as the second fastest loser)
And then BOOM! 7.36s in the final...

Gail Devers goes in the Women's 60mh tomorrow...in great form after winning the Women's 60m final yesterday in a season's best time of 7.08s...I think if she runs well and gets the good starts she was getting yesterday...she will be relaxed and just open up...I think we are looking at a possible low to mid 7.7x time...

Women's 400m final looked great today, as Nazarova led two other women to sub-51.00...Nazarova running 50.19s...proving that her 49.68s was not that much of a fluke...I believe everyone was expecting too much from her after she ran that stunning 49.68s at the Russian Championships....Nice to see young Tonique Williams claiming the Bronze medal...Possibly USA's next top 400m woman???

It seems to me the US' 110h depth is dwindled a bit of late. Allen is smart enough to realize he doesn't have to hammer every round like in years past, which is maybe helping him really step it up in the final.

My "maan," Urbas has been . . . eliminated from the competition :t-: . He is going to run in lane one in the final of 200 m. If he is going to get a bronze medal, in my personal opinion, he is going to be the champion.
What is the average disadvantage of the lane one to the lanes 4, 5, and 6 in the 200 m competition indoors?
