As of yesterday we know who our men's marathon team is. Alan Culpepper wins and Meb Keflezghi (sp) takes second with Dan Browne coming in third. The times were not earth shattering but this isn't a bad team. It is the best we have even if it isn't up to par with the rest of the world. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

They won't make much noise internationally, but it looks like a deeper squad than we've had in a while. It takes a good base to build top performances off of, so I take that to be a good sign.
I haven't seen full results, but my old HS league put at least 2 guys in the top 20.

Did you run against them or were you there at a different time period? _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

I was '92, so right in between them. I think I ran against Browne before he became the super stud his Jr/Sr year, but I don't believe I ever lined up against Scott.
Scott's a guy that likely would have been one of the top guys in the nation had he not been derailed by a back injury his sophomore year. As it was, he came back to get 10th at state XC as a senior (our top guy who Scott was ahead of prior to the injury won state easily) and his last two years at UO posted the fastest provisional time in the 1500m that didn't make it to nationals (3:43 both years). Very tough competitor. It isn't an unusual sight to see him crossing the finish line in a superman position...

I understand the temperature was 36 deg. A little on the cool side. I was very happy to see Browne take the 3rd slot. _________________ Paul

Eddy Hellebuyck of Albuquerque and Kevin Collins finished 8th and 12th respectivly (both NM runners). I think Hellebuyck was the first masters runner finishing in 2:15.
Hellebuyck is also the coach of the controversal Shadrack Kiptoo of Footlocker HS fame.
I have always been a fan of Culpepper!! |
