For binge eating, I think I could be competitive. how about 9 Taco Supremes in 15 minutes. Probably wondering if I should use this Thumbs Up or this :t-: on that sentence! Confused

RACE REPORT

Last night was one of those rare weekday evening races. The jingle Bell Riendeer Run 5K in downtown Statesboro, GA. The race started at 5:30 just as the sun was setting and the temp was 49 which is cold for here. I started at a comfortable pace that took me through the first mile in 8:09 and even though I felt like I picked it up during the second mile the two mile split was just 16:31. Then just a couple of minutes later the wheels came off Crying or Very sad

My left calf tightened up to the point that I was reduced to a survival shuffle. That last mile was tough. People that I had passed in the first two miles were now catching and passing me. Oh well, I was still passing trees and bushes like they were standing still. Surprised

I had hoped to break 25 minutes but that calf slowed me down to a 27:10. That age grades to 24:50 but that is no consolation. The calf is still tight and painful this morning. But I'll get over it. Very Happy

Since the race I have done a 2 mile run and two 30 minute runs and the calf feels fine. I don't know what happened in the race. So tomorrow I am stretching it out to 90 minutes slowly with a couple minutes walk every 20 minutes or so.

I haven't given up on the idea of running/walking the marathon in Feb but the half is more likely. I'll just play it loose and see what happens.

Calves are funny things. They can cramp up without warning and be fine again for no apparent reason. What sort of surfaces are you running on these days? Staying off pavement as much as possible will help avoid another flareup, at least until you're sure it was a one-time occurrence.

I'm running about 75% pavement and the rest dirt. It's harder to get much more trail type surface around here. One good thing though is that I am rarely on concrete.

Today's run was the pits. No energy. Dead legs. Stomach kept wanting to cramp up. I did shuffle through 5 miles at a 10:30 pace and called it quits. The other two runs this week were about 3.5 miles and they felt easy at 9 minute pace.

Oh well, you have good days and you have bad days. Neutral

I had 6 weeks straight of runs like that. Sad

Yes, leg problems can be tricky. I suffered calf problems in 1999, I assumed from too much speed work. I came off a great late summer surge, including a 69 sec 400, which still remains my best 400 for this stage of life, and in the late Fall-Winter hurt my calf which put me out of commission for months. Eventually I wondered if it was compartment syndrome (which brings up another problem, self-diagnosis). I still have a dark spot on the outside of my left shin 7" up from the ankle bone.
This year I haven't had any achilles or calf problems at all. Are my lower legs just getting used to the pounding from the transition from explosive training to endurance training? I really don't have the answer. I can tell you that I hardly ever leave the house for a workout without doing my ankle rolls with the tubing and massaging my calves with "The Stick".
I think weight could be a factor. I am 15 lbs lighter than I was during that Fall-Winter period. I do the speed work, now, and am tired the next day, but I just don't have the lower leg soreness.

I did two 4 mile runs this week and everything feels good. So I will try for another long one this Saturday. The closer I get to February the more it looks like half marathon and not marathon. Saturday should give me more of an idea.

Did 90 minutes today at a run 9/walk 1 ratio. I was able to keep a 10:07 pace which took me almost 9 miles. Not bad but the calves did get real tight the last few minutes. Next weekend I may try for an hour and 45 minutes and see how the body reacts to that.
