FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The story of Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and the Corps of Discovery continues to fire American imaginations. Traveling over 8,000 miles in 28 months, the Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed the territory of the newly acquired, but uncharted Louisana Purchase and beyond to the Pacific Ocean.
They walked, rode, and paddled for a total of 2 years, 4 months, and nine days. This was one of the most remarkable and productive military and scientific explorations in American history.
A group of runners in the Northwest did some exploration of their own by laying out a 506 mile, six day running relay to commemorate the Lewis and Clark trip. The relay starts in Kamiah, Idaho (Lewis and Clark called it "Canoe Camp") down the Clearwater, Snake, and Columbia rivers to Ft. Clatsop on the Oregon coast. The course follows the route of Lewis and Clark on the Washington side of the Columbia River, camping where the explorers stopped two hundred years ago. Nightly camps include food and entertainment.
All the maps were drawn, the "legs" laid out, exchange points charted, permits issued, caterers set up, teams registered, and then.......our main sponsor dropped out!
We need about 200 12-person running teams to make sure we have a safe and enjoyable run. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate the most important event in American history.
