I can't help but appreciate that Micah is not only an idealist, but also a realist.

The way I see it, the developers of new drugs will always be ahead in the drug race than non drug users. I don't know how long it takes to develop a test against a drug (can someone inform me on this?), but it would seem to me that there would always be a few months were the athlete could use a drug without needing to worry about being caught, even if they have a sample tested.

Of course I don't want drugs in sports, but I just don't see sports being drug free. Athletes are starting to use drugs earlier now (even in HS) and they've pretty much been part of the game.

Quite a while, based on the THG articles. Once they had the drug sample in their possession, it took the UCLA lab something like 3-6 months to develop a working test for it. Another article said it's believed designer steroids are often discarded after a year or so, so it's conceivable that half a drug's lifespan is passed before a lucky catch like THG can even be detected, and that's assuming they are handed a sample at the start of the usage cycle.

Retroactive punishment is not much of a deterrance. Most people think in terms of today and tomorrow, not a year down the road. Punishing people long after the fact just sours the sports perception even further without really accomplishing anything. So yes, the testers will always be a step or two behind, and that right there is why I believe the concept of drug testing in sport is fatally flawed from the very beginning. Punish 'em and they just find ways to avoid being caught. Parenting 101.

AND as we saw with THG you need to know the drug exists in order to develop a test for it !!!! If the testers know the drug exists then it stands to reason that the users know that the testers know ... Ergo you just move on to something else ...

In this case some high profile individuals have been caught - Dwain Chambers, Regina Jacobs, Kevin Toth ... But under normal circumstances (ie no one turning in a syringe of dope) the drug would still be under the radar and so would these individuals ... Others may get caugt as they retroactively test for THG, but this was fortuitious at best and really had little to do with the ability of the testers to "catch" the cheaters ... Those not using THG will be much more careful and are still in the sport - juiced up ...
