So … Where are we headed now ?? It is clear that this is going to be the biggest thing to ever hit the sport when it comes to drug testing … We already have a 74 foot shot putter and a 9.8 sprinter testing positive for THG …. And we know this is the tip of the iceberg … Heads are gonna role and athletes are gonna be banned – potentially for life !!!

Many questions loom … But before I ask a few questions let me make a statement … If you love the sport there is no joy in seeing athletes being taken down for this … While they may deserve what they get, it is still sad for the sport !!! I see people cheering that the Americans are getting caught or the British are getting caught … People cheering because this camp or the other is involved … Hoping this coach or that coach gets it … Its all sad … Its all negative for the sport … And I find little to cheer about … The end result of it all will be to help clean up the sport, but the fall out that has and will continue to occur during the process is very sad indeed … More shame, disgust and negativity will be heaped on a sport that desperately needs anything but …

So where are we headed ???

1) How many “stars” from various countries will be “missing” in Athens ??
2) Will bans be 2 years, 4 years, or life !!!
3) How far back will the IAAF be able to test ??
4) Will marks / records be removed from the record books ?? And if so how far back ??
5) What kind of medal redistribution nightmare are we facing ??
6) What will this do to the overall credibility of the sport ?? Worldwide ?? In the US ??
7) What will this do to an already difficult sponsorship base for the sport ?? Especially in the US ??
8 ) What will marks look like from this point forward ?? We’ve already acknowledged that the top producers are already on the downside, what will be the “outstanding times” of the future – the future starting with next season ???

I don't have answers to any of those questions, obviously. Just one thing to say ... mothers' eating their young. Rolling Eyes

___I agree. The IAAF is very inconsistent in the way, it deals with the cheats.

____Many athletes may be banned, at least beyond the 2004 Olympics. The IAAF is supposed to test additional 400 double-samples taken from athletes during the last world championships.
____Does anybody want to make a guess how many of the 400 are going to get banned? My guess is that that there will be a lot o athletes whose reputation will be tarnished, but no more than a dozen bans.

This has the potential for chaos and no one should be cheering anything that comes out of this. And it's not just t&f. Seems that other sports may get dragged into it too.

And yet many are. Die-hard track fans, even.

My opinion at this point is no one will be suspended. It is simply too big. A banned substance has to be listed, and this one isn't. There will be a move to list it immediately and retest for it. Who knows the length of time it stays in the body. If Balco Labs has their act together, it will be a short term drug like EPO, unlike Nandrolone, which can be detected past 6 months.

Actually, it doesn't have to. The big think with Kelli White's modifinil case was the "related substances" clause in the banned list. There's talk of changing that in the future, but for the time being it covers stuff not yet listed.

I read somewhere that a few drops are thought to have a lasting effect of up to 7 months, but I'm not sure if that means it is traceable for that long.

I think too big a can of worms has been opened at this point to not drop the hammer on at least a few people. Neutral With aspects of it already headed to court, there's no telling how big and damaging it could get. No way to save face at this point.
