I'm a cross-country runner at a division 2 school in Pennsylvania and I was looking at this one question.....why do i run?.....well here's an answer for you:
People can't understand why a man runs. They don't see any sport in it. Argue it lacks the sight and thrill of body contact. Yet, the conflict is there, more raw and challenging than any man versus man competition. For in running it is man against himself, the cruelest of opponents. The other runners are not the real enemies. His adversay lies within him, in his ability, with brain and heart to master himself and his emotions.
What hits me and gets me really pumped up is a quote said by a friend and fellow teammate....it reads:
"......but there are no words to explain the feeling when u toe the line and know that u have put in hundreds of miles, hours, days, months, years of work just to be able to do what u are about to do. to think that u can not possibly move any faster, and then u realize that u must. there is something that is addicting about it, u have to test ur self. no matter how much i dont want to run some days i always do and everyday i ask myself why i do. and everyday i eventualy realize that i run because i must....without it im lost. it has become as much a part of my life as eating and breathing....as sad as that might sound to some of u. "
...............could someone say "pre"?
For all you runners out there....I hope you understand that because that is deep. |

I quite agree. Now, if you can answer the age-old question, "why does my teammate insist on grammar and punctuation not suited for others to read," then we might be getting somewhere.

Good stuff KUrunner.
I think a lot of it boils down to a feeling that running becomes a way of life and not just something that you do. For me it is a way that a 47 year old can continue to be an athlete and enjoy competition. Would I run if there were no races to compete in? Probably, because some of my most memorable runs were not races. So it is more than the races too.
I guess in a lot of ways we do it because it just would not feel right not to do it. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Other than hitting most of my annual HS alumni runs, I haven't raced since mid-'97 and I still run as much as possible, so I'm definitely in agreement that there's more to it than just the racing. Way of life is a good summary.
