Hi, everyone. I just stumbles across this site and I am so glad I did. What I have seen so far seems really great.
Let me introduce myself. I am a 35 year old, female who is a runner wannabe. I was a high school cross country and track runner (my dad was the coach) and I was quite successful back then. Minus chasing my 2 young boys around I have not been particularly active since. I am not "in shape" but I am not "out of shape" either.
I can walk 5 or so miles without a problem.
I am ready to get back into running and am so excited about it. I have set my first goal, which is a 5K, at the end of July. My ultimate goal is to run the NYC marathon in Nov. 2004. So, I have 17 months to reach that goal.
So, I guess my first question is......where do I start? Is starting with 30 minutes of running a good place? How many times a week? I will use my dad's experience, but it seems that there is a whole lot of experienced people here!!!!

Hi Kris,
Welcome aboard!
My basic approach to situations like yours is just keep it simple. All the fancy training plans in the world won't amount to anything if they don't get you out the door... The first step needs to be just reintroducing your body to the rigors of running. A few miles here and there, walk/run breaks, days off as necessary -- whatever it takes to get you back into the routine. At that point, you can better guage your fitness level, remaining time to prepare, and specific time goals.

Hello Kris,
Welcome to the forum. Your goals are completely realistic and achievable. I echo Dan's comments and would simply add "keep it fun". I have had to come back from injury a couple of times and like to use walk breaks until I work back up to 30 minutes of running 4 times a week. From that you can build to just about any goal you want.
BTW, I have visited the Albany area and the Adirondacks. Beautiful
