I started running about a month ago.. Now keep in mind I have never run before. I started to run to get in shape.. Alright to loose weight.
When I started I had a hardtime running a half mile on a tredmill. I am now running between 4-5miles on a trail 3-4 times a week and I know I can push myself to do more.
I guess the scary thing about it all is that I am started to get addicted to it. I used to see people running and think they were NUTS.. But now I see the appeal...
Last year my cousin ran the Chicago Marathon. I thought she was crazy at the time.. Well now I want to achive that goal. My question is can I train for the 26mile run by October 12th,2003? I am determined....But is this goal unobtainable? Any pointers would be great.... and I mean anything......
On a side note, I have been reading your board here for about a week and am REALLY enjoying it... I check it once or twice a day and it has given me some GREAT information.. Thanks guys! |

Thanks for stopping in.
I can't really answer whether or not that goal is attainable. A lot of it depends on whether you want to just finish or if you want to run a specific time... It sounds like you're adapting to this whole running thing pretty quickly, so I wouldn't count out your chances. My advice would be to just stick with what you're doing, keep building up the mileage, and see in another month or two how things are looking. If you're managing 10+ mile runs by then, you should be well on your way.

Udhorky Here.. Sorry I changed names......
Signed up to be on the board now......
Dan thanks for the advice.. Being 22 years old and being semi active the last few years I am not starting from the very bottom...
One thing I know I need to do is set up a spreadsheet to track my progress..
Second thing is I need to get a watch to measure spead and distance.. Any specific model that you recommend?
I will keep trucking along the next few months and see where I stand... I will keep you all posted from time to time..... And like always I will sit back.. read.. And take in all that you guys offer...
thanks |

I rarely use a watch anymore, except for the occasional interval workout, and I've never been one for recording workouts, so I'm not really the one to ask.

Welcome to the neighborhood.
I use an old fashioned running log purchased at the local Barnes & Noble. But then again I am a computer neanderthal. Unlike Dan, I record every run and every detail I think is worth mentioning. I guess I'll reread them some day when I am even older than I am now.
I use a Timex Ironman with 100 lap memory. And no Dan, I have not used all the laps on one run.
How about your shoes? What are you wearing and who fitted you with them?
You can probably run a marathon in October. In fact you are welcome to join the "I'm Gonna Do It" thread in the Distance Den if you would like. Good luck and don't be a stranger.

As far as running watches go, all I've ever used is Timex Ironman. Any ol' stopwatch would fit my limited needs, though. As for knowing distance, before long you'll develop a decent sense of how far you've gone. If you want something a bit more precise, hit the track on occasion to figure out what your average pace is, then calculate your distance based on how long you ran. Even more precise would be measuring it on a bike, with a wheel (call Paul!), or seeing if trail measurements exist somewhere.

Thanks guys... I am sure as I run more I will get a better feel for distance as well as speed.
As for shoes I did research on runnersworld.com and a few other sites.. I gathered info on what I thought would work and headed to the store. I tried on 5-7 pairs of shoes and bought what felt best. I went with a pair of Adidas.. I dont have the model with me now... They are working out so well. I used to have a pair of N.B. and I thought they felt good until I got my new pair..
thanks guys |

So you like adidas? I have been running since 1977 and just bought my first pair of adidas...the Super Nova Cushion.
I love them.
I have mostly run in Nike over the years with the occasional pair of New Balance. I also liked a pair of Asics but they wore out sooner than I would have liked. I think I will stick with adidas for a while. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |
