I wonder if there was friction with the author or if Wetmore is just the kind of person who isn't interested about what others write about him.

Probably a bit of both, but I would think curiosity would get the best of someone in that situation... I'd be surprised if he hadn't read at least some of it, though. Saying he hasn't read it allows him to avoid questions of whether or not he thinks it's an accurate assessment...
