I think there was an article similar to this, here at Run-Down, but here is another article:

Good article, thanks. Would've been nice to hear about a few of the other Oregon Project residents, as I believe a number of them have done quite well.
Two things that stood out to me:
Quote: | running on underwater treadmills |
What the heck kind of equipment is that??? I guess the days of keeping the hair dryer away from the tub are long gone...
Quote: | In the early 1980's, Salazar dominated distance running. He won the New York Marathon three years in a row, and set a world record of 2:08:13 at New York in 1981. Amazingly, no American-born runner has matched that time since. |
Salazar isn't American-born, is he? I know they don't explicitly say he is, but it's definitely implied.

Underwater treadmills, I don't have a clue.
I assumed Salazar was American-born ? maybe 2nd generation ? Didn't he go to high school on the east coast somewhere. |

I'm not entirely sure, but I thought he was Cuban (?) born and grew up in the US. He could be second generation, though.

Good article. I have been following Browne since his days with the Army's World Class Athlete Program. He could very well be the future of American marathoning.
I was thinking Salazar was born in Cuba.  _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

I've been following him since he was a goofy little average runner from West Linn HS.

That's cool.
In high school did he ever show that he had potential to be where he is now? _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

His last two years, definitely, but up till then you never would have seen it coming. We ran in the same district and he's a year younger than me. As a sophomore, I don't think he was even top-5 on a very weak XC team. By his junior year, he was top guy in the district and one of the top 3 or so in the state; I think winning the 3k title in track. By senior year, he was pretty much untouchable, and he's hardly slowed down the progression curve since. As I recall, he was a scrawny little kid with big floppy feet. You'd never guess it looking at him now...

I'm not sure if anyone said this, but Salazar moved to the US from Cuba when he was 2 with his family. |

Thanks for confirming what I thought I had seen elsewhere. Always nice to know I remember a thing or two correctly.
