1000 miles? I would rather take the punches
Sort of reminds me of a weird story "The Long Walk" by Steven King (under his earlier pen name "Bachman"). If any of you have read it, you will know what I mean.
Last month the personnel director stuck his head in my lab door and asked "are you in the 401k"?, without thinking, I replied "are you nuts, thats over 200 miles" then the light bulb went on (all 3 watts of it) _________________ If I could only run like John Capel... |

Hey Ranger, that's the kind of nutty anecdotes that are perfect for the "Running Stories" page!

OK, there were more than a couple of favorites, in fact you had one rank way up there also. I listed one in a best winter quote post.

I'm not sure if you'd like it more or much much less if you have gone through a few workouts that remind you how true that statement is. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Maybe its one of those things you appreciate more from the sidelines. I probably wouldn't like it as much if I had to actually go through it. On the other hand, didn't those workouts put their mark on you, both as an athlete and as a coach?? I'm assuming you weren't called "the bull" because you took the easy way out.

Those workouts definatly put there mark on me. Which usually resulted in me marking the ground with the remains of my lunch _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

[Makes rare venture to distance world...starts to feel a little dizzy beyond 400m but struggles on...]
Here's an article about this:

It's not at all easy - you have to run one mile in each of 1000 consecutive hours. Think about that. When do you sleep? Eat? Toilet? In fact they run in 2 mile stints - one at the end of an hour and one at the start of the next - then rest for 1.5 - 1.75 hours. For 6 weeks. Then they run the London Marathon.
Think I'll stick to sprints!

I don't think anyone's saying it is easy. Just not exactly a test of endurance or competitiveness. Take those two out of the equation and what are you left with?
The rest period is a little like the Eugene to Corvallis Civil War Relay. 5-person teams cover the 50 miles in 5 legs each of roughly 2 miles. When I ran it, I think we had around 40 minutes of rest between legs, most of which was spent hopping in and out of the van, so eating and relaxing was next to impossible. Granted, that's half a day and not 6 weeks, but the goal was to actually beat people, not go on ad nauseum...
