I hate to get back on topic here but in the latest photo I've seen of the funky blue monkey he's wearing a USA track singlet (possibly a speed suit, he's sitting down so I can't tell). At least now they've got that stupid thing dress right. I just want to know how hard it is to dress him like a track athlete before you introduce him instead of letting him look like a Globetrotter for a month. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

That definitely looks like a track singlet. Of course, they've probably got him not wearing any pants...

Your probably right now track will not only be criticised by those oppossed to drug use, those disappointed with its own inability to promote the sport, but now by the moral right who are offended by mascot nudity. On the upside the USATF just got the partial support of the US nudist association. They'd give us full support but funky would have to loose the singlet and go with only a USATF head band. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Just read the fine print and make sure they aren't specifying full frontal support. This from the organization (USATF) who, shall we say, lost their pants in the previous leadership's televsion deals...
Now, if the mascot is wearing Gail Devers' bun huggers, that might turn at least one person (Micah) into a fan.

Funky wearing Gail Devers bun huggers! The USATF must throw one wild new years party
Sorry if that was a bit off color but I couldn't resist. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Voting is underway:
http://www.usatf.org
I'm having a hard time bringing myself to vote for any of them... Just doesn't seem right to support this atrocity. At least "Re-run" can be seen as an accurate assessment of the mascot's borrowed status, so I may go with that.

This is actually listed on the USATF website.
Actual names:
Current seeding of competitors:
1 Spike
2 Re-run
3 Tailwind
4 ZoomByU
5 Cinders
6 Victor E.
"Fun" names:
Current seeding of competitors:
1 Trackenstein
2 Dude Where's My Car...so I can run over him
3 False Start
4 The Mascot Formerly Known As Bounce
5 Craig A. Mascot
6 Are cheerleaders next
The second set really makes me wonder, do they not realize they are being uproariously insulted?

I am really surprised at #5 Cinders, since kids in the targeted age group don't even know what cinders are. |

As far as that goes what do they know about tailwind or rerun ??? While they keep trying to put it off on the kids, it really has nothing to do with them in my opinion ... They screwed up and are trying to legitimize it ... _________________ Conway

I was sent a private note asking the following question (in response to some similar questions I raised on the t-and-f list):
Quote: | USATF has indicated via news release that "track and cross-country continues to grow as the #1 participatory sport at the junior high and high school levels." If it's already the top youth sport, then why the need for a mascot or for increasing participation? |
Hmm... Certainly makes one wonder if USATF isn't making up explanations on the fly. :t-:

High-paid execs covering up moronic blunders in a last-ditch effort to pardon their excuse of a career?! Never. What an outrageous proposition there Dan. Oh wait, it's the US's track and field governing body. Yeah, that sounds about right. |

Oh, they'll be doing plenty of running of their own in the next few weeks...
