Is it just when you run, or do any other activities cause it? Uphills, downhills, everything? How old are your shoes?

Sorry, I should have re-phrased the question. The age of the shoes is of little importance. It's the amount of miles on them that is signficant. Most shoes are good for 500 miles or less, some significantly less.

First, like Dan said, if you have used the shoes for more than 500 miles (less if they were "cheap" ), you should really invest some money in a new pair. It does wonders, trust me =)
One other thing you could do is try running like Michael Jordan (lets hope that's his name), you know, with a straight back, almost leaning backwards. It really helps me avoid back pain, and you get more optimal breathing =) |

Michael Johnson is the name you're looking for, easily confused with the other high profile "MJ" entertainers: Michael Jackson (and an average NFL'er by the same name), Magic Johnson, Marion Jones, and probably a few others (Mick Jagger, if you want to include whites).

Lie on your back. put your knees to your chest, then slowly stretch your feet over your head and touch the floor.

When the cushion in my shoes begin to fail, I initially feel it in my lower back. Stretching does not help as it is not the muscles which are ailing. A few days off and a new pair of shoes solves my back pain. Regarding shoes, I have tried some (Asic Gel) which did not last me 500 miles. Hope this helps...
