I doubt there's a single answer that applies to everyone. Some people run them relatively easy and can handle a dozen or more a year, while others "go to the well" and can only run one or two annually.

Ron Hill ran 115 marathons, 112 under 2:50, 29 under 2:20, PR of 2:09. 10 marathons during the year he was 48, including a 2:29. Nearly all were top-5 finishes. He still has a streak going of running every day for 40+ years so I doubt he regrets his marathon running career in any way. _________________ My Athlinks profile - some road races I've done and stuff |

Examples like that certainly fly in the face of any "rules" that might be proposed.
