This only happens to me when I'm running my hardest such as racing/time trials. After I run a mile at my fastest, I start coughing terribly as if my throat itches. It's not the type of coughing you get from being sick. The worst thing about it is that I cough terribly over the next 3 days or so. Any talking/laughing, will make me cough. There is another side effect that I get. Right after the mile run, I can't fully breathe in anymore because it feels like someone is sticking knives into my back. This only lasts for about 30 minutes though.
The odd thing is that it doesn't always happen after I run the mile. If I run an 800, the symptoms are a lot weaker and don't last as long, and if I run a 5K or a 10K, I never get those symptoms at all.
There are a bunch of conditions out there and have the same symptoms I get, but the conditions don't apply to me. For example, there is a condition called exercised-induced asthma where the symptom is coughing. The thing is that I don't cough after I train, I sometimes cough after I run the mile. Another condition is pleurosis where the membrane that surrounds the lungs is inflammed and fills with water. The symptom for that is that individuals will take shorter breaths instead of long ones to avoid pain in their lungs like I get.
Has anyone else experienced the same? And why does it sometimes happen? It seems like there is a 50/50 chance that I somehow end up coughing hard for 3 days after running the mile. There is one more thing, does anyone ever get the taste of blood in the back of the throat too? _________________ My favorite all time race: Hicham El Guerrouj - Prefontaine Classic Mile 2002 http://youtube.com/watch?v=4YykUTHzOL8
