I have read on this website and other places that whites usually train at 70% intensity, while Africans go from 80-85% to sometimes 90% intensity. Now here is the question...what if whites trained like Africans? Would they still be inferior and place worst times than Africans? One thing I know for sure is that their bone densities are much greater because of the vitamin D absorbed from the sun they live in, however that is not a problem for me.

And another observation: Ethiopians are naturally smaller than other Africans, but faster. Haile is 5 feet 3 in, and Bekele is about the same height, but I noticed that these guys are fast....very fast. I wonder why at such a short height? I have heard also that the shorter, the greater the turnover speed or something like that.

Being small makes you more likely to win a marathon in warm or hot humid weather.
Human body can only digest up top 0.8 liters of fluids an hour; bigger you are, more fluids you need (based on The Lore of Running [/http://vincovitanj.tripod.com, Noakes, MD): if your are 6' tall, you will need over a liter of fluids every hour, but your body can digest only 0.8 liter.

What about in terms of sprinting speed, in events longer than 1500m?

I do not know; but my common sense tells me that if you will run for less than an hour, it should not make a difference.

Do elite marathoners ingest anything while they run? I didn't see Haile drink or eat anything while running...

Just fluids for the most part. Some might be taking in energy gels, but I'm not sure about that.

I found that energy is very important when running a marathon...people have died of heart failure and other problems after the marathon.

Keep in mind, a top male marathoner is running the event in barely over 2 hours, while a mid-level to recreational runner is in the 3-4 hour range. That's a huge difference in duration and the energy requirements to finish.

I may not be a scientist, but I can use my commonsense and books that I read at:
-1) access

-2) click on my hypothesis.

Carb loading is a big factor before you run a marathon. The more energy you have going into a marathon the better you will perform.

With carb loading...it should keep you for 16 miles, the rest is pure determintation.
