There was an Associated Press article in yesterday's local paper entitled, "Donated blood loses vital part during storage," by Randolph E. Schmid. I haven't found it online, but check in a few days and it may show up in searches...

The article talks about how nitric oxide breaks down quickly in donated blood and how essential it is in opening up the blood vessels to allow the red blood cells to deliver oxygen. Furthermore, there is research into adding nitric oxide to the blood stream to improve oxygen delivery.

That doesn't seem far removed from the goals of blood doping... I'd be shocked if there aren't already athletes exploring this avenue. It doesn't sound like something that would even be testable.

You mentioned the word "doping." Is it true that if you look behind the business of a sport, in many cases certain athletes are "meant" to win? Like for example a coach offers $1 million to another coach in order to tell that coach that his athlete should let the coach's athlete offering the money to win the race. Don't they do those type of dirty negotiations behind sports, and buy medals from eachother? It can't always be about honesty and victory...

I'd be surprised if that happens on any meaningful scale. Athletes at that level are too competitive to be easily bought.

Oh ok then thanks for the information, it might be possible that there will be continuous advancement in undetectable steroid drugs in athletes though.
