Have you ever thought of having avatars allowed on the forum? You could enforce some kind of rules, like no larger than 10,000 bytes and no bigger than 100 x 100 pixels (to avoid unnecessary table-widening and long-loading pages), and if someone breaks the rules his or her avatar rights are taken away. The avatars could either be hosted on the server or you can make everyone hotlink them. Avatars are cool...

I've always liked them. It's nice for personalizing your account so everyone doesn't look the same, as long as everyone chooses a normal image and no one uses anything animated, annoying, or too big. Ohhhhhhhhh well.

Generally I don't like the extra stuff. I have a slow connection and I abhor anything that burdens my PC with extra fluff I don't need and particularily things I just don't like, and whatever it is, its usually both.

Forums are for the sharing of information, i.e. words. Pictures to the side are just distractions and do nothing to convey more information. I've yet to see an avatar that is an exception to the rule... If you want cute pictures, tape something to the side of your monitor.

If people want that, I'd rather put them online and simply post a link to them in the profile or sig. It's something you look at once, no reason to have it there on every page load, every message.
