I'll allow the poll to remain, but this thread will be closed and/or removed the moment any political commentary is added to it.

The professional polls have this election at a dead heat right now. I read an article this week that brought up the possibility of a 269-269 tie in electoral votes. If that happened then the House of Representatives would select the President and the Senate would select the Vice-President. Right now the House is Republican controlled and the Senate is Democratic controlled. That would probably produce George Bush for Pres and John Edwards for Vice-Pres. Surprised

I am not a Kerry supporter but neither will I be voting for Bush. I hope that doesn't qualify as political commentary. I think Kerry will garner very close to 300 electoral votes. It wouldn't surprise me if he got 60% of them.

Confused

I think that counts more as non-commentary...

Laughing That's one way to look at it. Though my kind of comment usually irritates all the hardcore people on both sides of the court. Thumbs Up

___I believe that this has happened before. However, I do believe that it was in the 19th century; and not because the electoral votes were tied. If I remember correctly, President was elected and Vice--President was elected by the people during early 1800's. Later, the system was changed.

If it was a tie and they had to elect each would they be required to elect the candidates that were put forward? I understand they would go with Bush, but would the Senate have to go with the VP candidate or could they go with Kerry or someone else if they wanted?

Totally hypothetical but just curious

You got me there. I don't know. If they can choose anyone maybe I'll apply. Surprised Laughing

___Since de facto, in the Unite States, we have binary party system -- I repeat de facto -- we do not need run--offs. However, in other countries, the run--offs are very often used. The run--off is used when none of the (many) candidates did not achieve 50% "plus one" of all the votes.
___For a similar situation to occur in here, at least one so--called independent candidate would have to win the election in at least one state: the college of electors' votes.

Many local elections have to have runoffs; mayoral and city commissioner elections, etc. Many are non-partisan so there will be a primary. If there is a clear majority, then that person is elected.

Obviously I was way off on my predictions! Good thing I'm not a pollster! Embarassed Rolling Eyes

I'd really rather keep politics (and religion) out of the mix altogether. Doesn't have any place here, in my opinion, and nothing positive is ever gained by discussing it. Usually just the opposite...

Actually I have had some very good conversations recently with some folks who have the opposite point of view... as long as the discourse is conducted with civility and people are open to other ideas its interesting.

Although I do agree with you Dan that too many times this degenerates into too much of a sticky situation and people wind up getting put on the defensive... Don't know how much the rest of you check the letsrun board but it has just been horrible... there are a lot of angry people over there and not just because of the election.
