They must've dropped the baton. Their semifinal time was better. Something had to go wrong. There is no way they ran that time withought messing up big time.

This is a huge disappointment for the United States.

But, you gotta give respect to Great Britain, they went out and did what they were supposed to do.

We all know the americans are gold medal quality sprinters and relay runners and it takes bad luck for them to lose, (it was a poor exchange by gatlin and miller that made them lose their lead), but as a brit it was pure joy to watch MLF hold off MO by a fraction and take that gold. A great day for British athletics after kelly holmes doing the rare double of winning the 1500m after her 800m win when overall it was a mediocre olympics in the track and field events. We really needed that to lift our spirits, After radcliffes disappointment and javelin great Steve Blackleys final farewell ended in fourth, missing out once again on that elusive gold.

I'm a Brit myself, and that race was the worst thing I've seen in ages...a poor change from Gatlin to Miller, and then another poor change from Miller to Greene, as Greene had to dramtically slow down to receive the baton...but boy was he making up the ground on MLF in the final stages...I wanted the USA to win the Gold and break the WR in the process, and now they didn't achieve none of those predictions and ended up with the Silver running outside of 38.00...I have to give props to the GBR team for winning, good for them, but I don't want to say anymore about that.

Nigeria won the Bronze, but them medalling always seemed like a prospect...and they did indeed medal equalling the time that they ran in the heats (38.23)...

The USA team should seriously practice more often...and just get Coby Miller off of that team, he sucks! They shoulda put Darvis Patton on that 3rd leg, like they did last year, as he is a great curve runner and has the ability to make up ground on any one running the curve...except maybe Crawford...

Yeah, I think the team was doomed to start ... There was not thought in its construction ... Simply the first 4 guys at the Trials ... Miller has lacked consistency his entire career AND is not a great turn runner ... REcipe for disaster ... Why wasn't Bernard Williams on the squad ??? The fastest second leg in history !!! Both the men's and women's 4x1 suffered from really poor coachign decisions ... Sad ...

Maybe it was bad preparation than the team itself. Apart from Coby, the other runners were all 9.8 sprinters this year , but that just shows you the importance of smooth handovers. As you will recall in the seventies the east germans use to provide stiff competition because they were so good with their handovers even though they lacked the basic speed of the americans.

Williams would have been the ideal choice. But it seems that the WR performance would have been a long shot even if they did have good changeovers.

It makes you appreciate the worldrecord holders of 92 and 93.

As for great curve runners, one of the best I ever recall was Calvin smith who was part of the 83 and 84 teams as you all well know.

Going back to the British team, they had luck on their side but also had very good changeovers and earned that gold.

If we passed as well as half the teams out there, the WR would be much lower ... There is no reason with the gains in speed during the 90's and into the 00's that the record shouldn't be much closer to 37.00 !!!

Our relay methods (like the way we put together our basketball teams) are outdated ... We really need to look at developing some sort of National relay squad ...

Absolutely ... I ran on relay teams in high school and college that consistently outran teams with much faster overall footspeed ... And we did it by passing extremely well ...

Given the speed in the US there is no way that the WR shuold still be 37.40 ... They run mid 37's off nothing but speed ... Hopefully this loss will be a wake up call to the powers that be ...

Then again, probably not ...
