Something interesting is going to happen on Jan 2. Tim Twietmeyer and Dean Karnazes are planning on running the Western States 100 course. That means lots of sub zero temps and piles of snow. We are talking 7,000 foot elevation in the dead of winter. Remember, this is the same place where the infamous Donner party was stranded and had to resort to cannabilism.
Of course if anyone can do it these two have a legitimate chance. After all Tim is a 5 time winner of the WS100 and Dean has finished in the top 10 several times including 4th last year.
Could this be the start of a winter Western States? _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Is this an actual race, or are they just trying to run a ridiculously tough course at the worst time of the year? What exactly is the incentive?

It's not an official race. Why are they doing it? I don't know.
For the fun of it?
Because it's there?
Because they can? _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

I see. So, they're basically doing a fun run to see if they can survive it, instead of doing something competitive. It's not like an ultra runner has a limited number of shots at big races during any one year... Nice 'n easy on the body.

There probably is an adventurous streak in most ultrarunners and this sounds like one of those situations where some one wondered if the thing could be done and some one else said why not and the adventure began.
After all that is the way WS and the Ironman started and Everest got climbed and the Amazon got navigated and my garage got cleaned out. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

They did it.....sort of.
The run was postponed one week because of weather. Then Twietmeyer, Karnazes, Bill Finkbiener and Jim Northey started at 5:00 last Saturday. Northey twisted a knee and had to drop out but the other three did complete 75 miles in 26:48 between Squaw Valley and Auburn, CA trying to stick to the regular trail as much as possible. It was 18 degrees at the start with 10 feet of snow in places. They traveled 45 miles in snowshoes and spent about 4 hours thawing out at make shift aid stations along the way.
Sounds like a good adventure and I am sure it will be featured in Ultrarunning so I will give more details when it comes out. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Woah! I'd say that's toeing the line between being extreme and being extremely stupid. _________________ November 9th... |

Sort of puts our recent snow storm to shame...
