There's a big difference between CNS fatigue and muscular fatigue, although it gets confusing trying to differentiate the two. You can max out sprint efforts while only really taxing the CNS, provided enough recovery is available. With longer distances, the aerobic component is important enough that recovery must be sacrificed, to the point that anything of that same intensity will likely cause lasting muscular fatigue in addition to the CNS fatigue. Too many days of that will lead to breakdown. Or something like that.
