Just when I started to get into my cross country season I got this cough. It wasn't bothering me much at first so I just figured it was a regular cold. That was over a month ago, I still have it, and it's ten times worse. After I cough, I can't really inhale, instead, my entire ribcage just feels like it's caving in. Sometimes the only way to start breathing again is to throw up :t-:
I had some tests done and the doctor confirmed that it's whooping cough. I don't know how I managed to catch it, and supposedly I was vaccinated for this back in grade 3 or something.
Anyways, this is really disrupting my training all I've been able to do in the last couple weeks are easy 30-40 minute runs and I usually have to stop several times to puke.
My last high school cross country race will be Provincials on November 1st and the doctor said that it's quite likely that I'll still have it at that point. I guess that what I'm asking is do you guys think it would be better for me to tough it out and do my best in XC even if it means throwing up all over the course (during the race) or should I just aim my training at the next track season. Basically I think it's too late for me to do as well as I had hoped in XC this year, so I want to do what would put me in the best condition for track. Is cross-country training what I should be doing right now, or would some other kind running aimed more at track put me in a better position? (keeping in mind that I will be focusing on 3000/5000) |

That's a tough break.
Wouldn't any hard training be equally difficult right now? Seems to me you'd be best off just running a moderate amount (whatever you can do that doesn't make the situation worse), and hope for the best this XC season. If November rolls around and you're not race ready, just look at it as a decent base for track without the usual end of season fatigue.

In this situation I would lean toward doing whatever will get you well the quickest even if that means complete rest until the cough is gone. If training agravates it then it will take longer to get well, and looking at it long term I think you would be better off getting rid of the cough rather than trying to train through it. I just asked the doctor about it today and she said that running won't make it last any longer. It just makes it worse while I'm running.
I'm thinking that I'll just continue to train through it. |

Placed 22nd at the BC high school champs this Saturday. I still have the cough and have been struggling to race. I hardly made it through the qualification race so I wasn't expectng much. I felt great after the first of three laps at provincials and managed to move up to the top ten, but then it hit me and I couldn't breathe. Had to stop to throw up and fell back to about 30th. All I could do in the last half of the race was work my way back up to 22nd. Given the circumstances, I did better than I expected, but still a dissapointing season.
Can't wait until track starts! |

I'd say that's a pretty successful day, given the situation. Nicely done. Any idea how much longer till you're fully healthy?

It's supposed to last 3-4 months and I'm somehwere in between there. Should be gone any time now. At least I hope so. |

Nice race Graeme
To run with that affliction and then to make up lost ground after "calling Ralph" displays a lot of toughness. You are going to be alright

We don't really have an indoor season, unless I decide to go down to the states for some races, so I'll probably get some road races in before outdoor track starts up again. |

How cold is "cold weather"?
We usually consider 0 degrees celsius almost as low as it gets, which is nothing to the negative 30's that they're getting in the rest of the country. |
