Could you expand a bit on what myth you're referring to?

There's talk of re-writing the rules for illegal caffeine levels, but the limit has been the equivalent of 5 cups of coffee. I assume that would also be in the neighborhood of 5 cups of Coke...

A Polish high jumper, Walerianczyk, was officially reprimanded by IAAF because he tested positive for caffeine doping. As of January 1, 2004 caffeine is going to be removed from the IAAF banned substances list.
Does caffeine help? Yes, in some cases it does - - a sustained effort over a long distance (e.g..running 10K at even fast from the get-go pace) Is the mechanism known? No. For more information, please refer to The Lore of Running by Tim Noakes.
Is caffeine bad? No - there is no evidence to support that caffeine negatively affects runner's performance.
