What are the top ten track and field colleges that you will recommend for a sprinter? You can also name jc's or city colleges.

Kind of an overly general question, don't you think? How about some background info as to what you're looking for, such as level of competition, region, team success vs. long-term development, academics, etc.

A few off the top of my head, in no particular order:

USC
UCLA
Baylor
Florida
Southern Carolina
Auburn
Texas
LSU
Arizona State
Blynn JC

There's one other big JC that I'm drawing a blank on the name of...

Big question here, are you male or female ???

Either way I'd eliminate USC and UCLA ... Two of my all time favorites but they haven't developed anyone in about a decade now ...

Another question is whether you are a short sprinter (100/200), long sprinter (200/400), or all around sprinter (100/200/400) ... And also whether or not you are hoping to run relays ...

I'm going to assume you are male, so I am going to say

Florida
Tennessee
LSU
South Carolina

Barton County JC in Kansas has sort of taken over the top spot JC wise ...

Just my opinions ...

Barton, that's the one I was trying to think of! I almost mentioned Tennesse, but I can only think of 2 people (Gatlin and Scott) they've developed, so I'm not sure that counts as anything but a [big] blip on the map...

I am male and run the short sprints:100,200, and 4x100. I heard a lot about Barton. Is that the one that is in Kansas and won the ttle 6 years in a row?

Yes that would be Barton ... They have a powerhouse going on there ...

Tennessee has produced many top flight sprinters recently aside from Gatlin and Scott ... First to come to mind is Gary Kikaya who won the NCAA 400 in 02 ... Sean Lambert is young and under 10.20 if I am not mistaken ... Their relays have been sub 39 and sub 3:03 ... Just going off the top of my head right now ...

UCLA and USC and Auburn haven't done much as of late ... Auburn has recruited well but developed little ... And the SoCal schools seem to be ruining their talent pools ...

Can't say I've heard of either of those Tennessee guys, which could explain my impression...

Have USC and UCLA not gotten talent of late, or have they just not developed what they've gotten? And Michael Granville doesn't count. Wink

Let's say that Granville is a perfect example ... Both have gotten oodles of talent ... Off the top of my head let's say Warren Rogersof UCLA, a 10.34, 20.80 kid out SoCal and Sultan McCullough (10.41, 20.69 hs) for USC ... Neither has done anything on the NCAA scene ... There are many others ... Just not developing the talent ...

Sultan I knew about. On the women's side there would be Angela Williams, and I believe a teammate who is very strong in her wake. I can't think of any other notables off hand, though.

Maybe things changed when John Smith focused his attention on HSI? I don't recall how long he retained the job at UCLA in addition, but it seemed to be around 3-4 years.

UCLA defnitely went in the toilet when Smith left ... NO doubt about that ... Not sure what to pin SC's problems on ... Either way they are just not getting it done ...

Both used to be perennial national powers ... Not any more ...

Power has defnitely shifted to the South ... Best place to be if you are a male sprinter who wants quality coaching and opportunity ... Same for females actually with the addition that Texas and Bev Kearney has an outstanding program ... But the best for women right now seems to be South Carolina ... Their womens sprint/hurdle program is tops right now ...
