How do I encourage non runners to run? I have a running club at high school, and I am wondinring if you guys have any ideads to encourage people to run. I have tried diferent days, times, etc. but people always have excuses, which are reasonable. I've tried aasking people in Cross Country but some people were forced to do it by their parents, others are too lazy to run on weekends, other they just don't have the passion. My friends are somewhat interested but cringe at the word "running."

We all know how rejuvinating running is, how do we convince others to try running?

I got interested in running when I took a weight traing class in my sophomore year in high school. My coach made the class run also, and said that we had to get an A if we could run a mile under 6:45. I hadn't ran in a bout a year, and my mile time was around 7:30. But I ran on my own for a week before the "test" and I ran the mile in 6:30! This encouraged me to take up running, and it has changed my life.

Explaining the appeal of running to non-runners is near impossible, as most of us know. I honestly can't think of any good ways to get people into the sport who don't already have an interest. Most lifelong runners I know of got an early start...

Paul, you took a rather unusual path to running as a full-time hobby. Any insight?

Dan

I have one strange idea - - bring your friends to the nearby park, and . . . release the dogs. Wink :t-:

That's a good way of getting them to run once, but it won't do much for repeat participants... Not to mention keeping friends. Neutral

I agree with Dan, for those that don't already have an interest.
I ran when I was in high school, so running wasn't foreign to me.
My biggest problem was making the transition from competitive sports to fitness training. I just wasn't motivated to go to the gym 3 or 4 days a week and do some circuit training and jump on the treadmill for a few minutes. And of the activities I could pursue, running seemed the most natural to me, and something that could be done year around. So I've been running off and on for the last 13-14 years. Only this year have I actually raced, but my training prior to this year involved intervals and speedwork. To go out and jog for 40 minutes 3-4 days a week wasn't going to cut it, either.
Now, as I keep improving, I can approach running from a competitive side, but knowing, also, all the fitness side benefits I am reaping.

I knew you had the field events background, but I guess I didn't realize you had done that much running over the years. So, we're back at square one, not knowing how to get people interested in the sport in the first place. Neutral

I personally think very few poeple in high school get into running because they think it means going out and running hard the whole way every day. Where I live, that's basically what people do in the PE classes, either walk, or run hard. They don't realize they they could still be within their ideal heart rate while jogging at a relatively easy pace. You don't have to run your guts out to improve your fitness (although it does help now and then Wink).

I know a PE teacher that managed to get an entire class set of heart rate monitors and got everyone to run with one on. They didn't have to race anyone else or finish in a certain time, just stay in their target range. If they went to fast, it would beep. Everyone was quite surprised at how easy it was compared to what they had been doing, and it was still beneficial. In fact, given the average person's situation, it's probably more beneficial than going out and killing yourself. She now, quite likey has the only PE class in BC that enjoys (or at least doesn't hate) running. Thumbs Up

Some people have nightmares about going to school naked and stuff like that ... well, you just described my absolute nightmare -- a PE class full of HR monitors!!! Surprised

I think that Dan was hinting that heart rate monitors are gadgets. He would be ANNOYED.
