I missed the first two heats this morning but here are the rest. I have only included names of the major players, so have ommitted runners from afghanistan, armenia etc for obvious reasons.
ht3. +0.2 1. K White 11.26 2.M Ottey 11.26
ht4. +0.1 1. Z Block 11.13 2.Jayasinghe (sri) 11.20
ht5. -0.3 1. Kiskova (rus) 11.26 2. Maduaka (GBR) 11.31
ht6. -0.1 1.Thanou 11.09 2.Tabakova (rus) 11.24 4.Ferguson 11.30
ht7. -0.2 1.Aaron 11.15 2.Devers 11.17
ht8. -0.7 1.Bailey (jam) 11.23
Sturrup won her heat in the quickest time of 11.08. Have no info on gaines at present, will keep you posted. Debbie ferguson, a sub11 runner this year looked very sluggish in her heat.
Thanou, the dark horse looked very sharp as did devers who appeared to be slowing down from the last 20m to be pipped by Aaron who did not seem as relaxed.
Hats off to ottey, still giving the youngsters a run for their money at 43 yrs of age. Would be nice to see her make the final.
Quarter-finals at 18.40 GMT, so stay tuned. |

Thanou looked very sharp and relaxed as did C. Arron. Merleneīs last 30meters looked incredible...but then it was just the first heat. Weīll see more later that evening.
Damn, am I exited. |

Impressive, that's close to season best form for Ottey. I'd forgotten Devers is qualified in the 100m ... she well could mess up my top-8 predictions. And of course Thanou looks to be in championship form after hardly being heard from for two years...

QF Results
ht1. +0.0
1.sturrup 10.98 2.devers 11.16 3.gevaert(bel) 11.23 4.kislova 11.26
ht2. -0.1
1.block 11.08 2.arron 11.08 3.ottey 11.23 4.perepelova(uzb)11.35
ht3. -0.2
1.white 10.96 2.thanou 11.11 3.ferguson 11.26 4.onyali 11.31
ht4. +0.0
1.edwards 11.08 2.bailey 11.18 3.tabakova 11.25 4.maduaka 11.29
The above qualify for tomorrows semis.
A contrast to the previous rounds, kelli white looking sensational as did sturrup. Devers was a little disappointing. Both her and thanou in particular did not get their trademark fast starts which is the best part of their race.
Looks like a 1-2 between sturrup and white with devers, arron, block and edwards battling for bronze.
And i have just realised gaines is not one of the us team members.
400m heats
ht1. Blackwood (jam) 45.13 2.milazar 45.15 3. moncur 45.40
ht2. c harrison 45.43
ht3. k kaya (co) 45.45
ht4. T washington 45.30 2.d caines (gb) 45.35
ht5. M raquil (fra) 45.49
ht6. J young 45.28
ht7. ? (bah) 45.35 ht8.na
Washington and young both looking sharp and relaxed. Blackwood ran the quickest heat but seemed to be working harder. |

Other than my Gaines/Devers mixup, looks like my picks are all moving through easily. I knew there was a reason I didn't think Gaines would place high...
Here's a good results link to complement Kishan's fine reporting:

The top times in those 400's are amazingly consistent.

Thanks for the compliment dan. I have looked at the iaaf website and it is very good, should keep our friends in the states updated.
Now i can stick to sharing my views with the rest of the members.
And talking of views, my money is still on sturrup by virtue of more championship experience as the possible deciding factor.
I figure sturrup in 10.85. |

I'm leaning towards White ... But Gail has a way of coming up big in 100 meter final races ... _________________ Conway

I know this is sprint country but couldn't pass up commenting on a final.
Deena Drossin took 12th in the 10,000 in 31:17. I'm a little disapointed in that. I was hoping for a top 5 from her. So now our best bet for a medal in anything longer than a sprint lies with Regina. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Never a safe proposition...
I'm not surprised to see Drossin falter and Radcliffe no-show. Too much marathon emphasis, in my opinion. Works ok for a few races, then the bottom falls out.

Regina jacobs has been around for a long time and seems to get better with age. Should do well in the final and get some sort of medal. Otherwise the americans will dominate their traditional events of sprints, hurdles. They have competely slipped off the rails in the horizontal jumps since the exit of the likes of lewis, powell, conley and harrison.
The last great american woman long distance runner who could take on the world was mary decker and even for the men i cannot think of any top runners other than steve scott and sydney maree who hung up their spikes decades ago, something johnny gray should have done earlier.
I guess i have dwelled too much on the longer distances, anything over 400m strictly off-limits in sprint-central. |

I was a bit disappointed in Drossin myself ... Was a season best for her but I keep thinking she is capable of more ... _________________ Conway

Zakari gets eliminated in round 1 of the 100m. I figured him for a darkhorse finalist.
Darrell Brown second in his heat in round 1, easily winning in round 2 in a fine 10.01 PR, bodes well for Team Run-Down Fantasy points... But Patrick Johnson eliminated in the second round, so probably a wash.
Montgomery running by far the best of his season through two rounds. Will he prove us naysayers wrong?
Ato Boldon possibly back from the dead ... X-King, this could do wonders for your reputation!! Swami says...
Jon Drummond and Asafa Powell DQ'd in their 2nd round heat. I hope that wasn't due to the stupid new false start rule?
Macrozonaris advancing through easily. Maybe Conway's uneasy feeling will come to fruition...
MLF barely qualifying through the rounds...
Heat 4, Round 2 quite the barnburner:
1 3 1226 Collins Kim SKN 10.02 Q 0.160
2 7 514 Chambers Dwain GBR 10.03 Q (SB) 0.132
3 5 1397 Greene Maurice USA 10.04 Q 0.106
4 6 1005 Aliu Deji NGR 10.04 Q 0.147
Quite likely half the final right there.
Women's 100m semis, all my picks advance except Ferguson.
Sanya Richards through easily in round 1 of the 400. I think she'll surprise a few people... She may not have the experience at this level, but the kid has a nose for winning.
Back to you, Kishan!

Darrell Brown 10.01s WJR!!!
And he eased down from about 90-95m.
Could run under 10sec in either Semi or Final if he pushes it to the limit???
Greene had a 0.106s Reaction Time!!!
Mo's 1st 50m was awesome. So he still has his Edmonton physical capabilities of geting to the 1st 50 or 60m in record time, and if his confidence reachs a peak, he still can pull away and end running a WR.
If that was the old Maurice he would of ended up in the 9.7s,9.8s range.
Eager to see him in the Semis. He will come up good, I know he will, and we need if faith...
And yes Dan, Boldon's ''resurrection'' has done more wonders for my reputation than his!!! LOL! _________________ Doubt whom you will, But never yourself.
