As a result of overpronation I am a self-diagnosed shin splints sufferer (I just got insoles for my shoes)! It is the typical dull pain (in my left leg) between the ankle and the knee on the inside of my shin. I was wondering, though, what the difference is between shin splins and a stress fracture of the tibia. Also, I have stayed away from running for the past few weeks (as hard as that's been!) And I am trying to figure out how and when to begin running again so as to prevent further injury. The pain has definately subsided, but I do still feel a slight pain and tingling sensation in that area of my leg. I am so anxious to get back into running! In the mean time, I have been practicing cycling, swimming, and pool running, but none of those are as enjoyable! During what stage of shin splints is it ok to begin running again? How long does it generally take to heal? |

One is typically muscle related, and the other is bone. Stress fractures require rest, whereas shin splints can be aggressively treated with no time off. If you haven't already seen it, I recommend you check out my shin splints exercise:

I have just spent 5 months off the track (just doing gym work and cycling) with a stress fracture (diagnosed by an orthopedic surgeon) and the main feature of it was that i could pin point an exact spot on the bone which was particularly painful rather than just a general pain at the front of the leg. I have just now started to run again on grass and hope to be back on the track in a few weeks |

That's true. I neglected to mention it because if there's any uncertainty on the matter, it should probably be left to a doctor's diagnosis.

the pediatrist examined my feet....apparently my problem begins at the hips.....they roll inward slightly, leading my feet to turn inward as well. in order to compensate i overpronate. Anyways, superfeet insoles are what the doctor recommended. But i have one more quick question!! He noticed a bone spur on the upper part of my right foot. I was wondering if anyone knew about that? Do bone spurs cause problems later down the line? |

If I'm not mistaken, bone spurs are basically just calcium accumulation from regular wear and tear and may or may not cause soreness depending on the situation.
