Most of them look solid, but there are a few that jump out, like Kipketer being picked for 7th in the 800. Unless his absence on the GL circuit has been due to injury or illness, I say no way to that...

Maybe it's just me, but I think Mo has no chance of Top 3 in the 100. His season has been pretty bad (with the exception of a few good races), and he always makes excuses.

Larry Wade won't do that well and it seems he always falters in big races.

It looks to me like the most exciting event in the whole WC will be the 5000s. If El G runs it, I'd give the advantage to him (how can you not give the edge to him?). But Chebii has an unbelievable kick (his 51.7 final circuit at Pre was incredible) and you can never count out Geb. The woman's 5k will also be great. I don't know if Szabo can win, but I hope she does. Hopefully we'll be able to see the WHOLE races as opposed to just the final lap

I wouldn't go so far as to say Mo has no chance, but he is a pretty big wild card at this point. He's got a lot of experience on his side, but also a lot of health concerns. No one's going to count him out, nor will they concede him anything...

I actually quite like Larry Wade. He's had a rough stretch of freak accident-type injuries off the track, but I think he's as tough of a competitor as any hurdler out there. Haven't seen much of Garcia lately, so I don't know what kind of shape he's in. I wouldn't be surprised to see Johnson and Wade go 1-2.

Easy: He's not the best 5k runner. Smile His one trump card is superior speed in a kicker's race, but even that has been demonstrated in his early forays into the event to not be an advantage over the rest of the field. He's also got a major lack of championship success stacked against him.

He still has the 2nd best time in the world this year, and that was 3 months ago when he said he wasn't in 5k shape. I know he's not the number 1 guy for the 5, but I still can't go against him. What event is S Cherono running? He has the top 5k and steeple time, but i didn't find him on either list. If Cherono isn't running the 5, then El G would have the field best 5k for 2003.

Also, do you know if they show the 5k in its entirety? or is it just the final lap like all other GL meets?

I don't know that anyone has definitively declared what they'll be running in Paris. Has ElG gone on record saying he will do the double? Last I heard, it was just something he's mulling over. No different from the past 3 years... If he pulled off the 1500/5k double, that would go a long ways toward rectifying his championship record. But for someone so apparently afraid of losing, will he really risk spreading himself so thin? I doubt it.

Wow outside of the obvious picks I find little agreement with TFN ... Oh well ... Such is life ... They seem so out of touch with the sport ... More and more ...

Which ones do you object to? Or are there too many to list?

___I believe that Green will win, or at least medal. I, as well, believe that there will be at least one Pole in the top three amongst the high jumpers.

MEN:
___Maurice Green will medal, but not win--> bronze.
___100 m top three, call me crazy, will be:
Williams, Montgomery, and Green --- USA all the way --- a sweep.
___The Pole who jumped 2.36 m (7 feet 8 inches and 7/8ths of an inch) this year should finish third in the worlds.-->bronze
___Marcin Jedrusinski will make top 8 in the 200 m, Marcin Urbas top 10.
___Jerome Young will not medal in the 400 m. He is not a clutch--runner and cannot take the pressure of a big competition too well. The PB'S and SB's do not run. He will find a way to be fourth.
__4 x 100 m, Poland will come before Italy as it always does in the major competition--> bronze. One of the top teams will mess-up along the way.

WOMEN:
___Jacobs will win bronze, and Favor will not make it to the final.
___Monika Pyrek will place third in the pole vault.
___Stacy Dragila will win.
___Polish 4 x 400 m team will place fifth.
___Kamila Skolimowska, the very first woman Olympic champion in hammer throw at the age of 18-teen, will win in the hammer throw.

Far too many ... They just seem to be hanging on anyathing other than this seasons performances ... Of course they have a history of hanging on to athletes coattails a bit too long ...

I don't think Dragila has any chance of even medaling, let alone winning. I don't think Jacobs will have a great race (i expect her to finish 6th or so). There's more, but that's it for now.

Right now, Dragila would be lucky to have medaled in the Russian champs... But like Greene, she's got experience on her side and cannot be counted out.

Just saw the following in an ATF writeup:
Quote:
Paris has had a heat wave, according to the Wall Street Journal
on August 15, 2003, at least 3000 people have died in the
city of 2.1 million with the hottest August in recorded history.
The temperature last Friday was 104 degrees. Note that the average
temperature is 77 to 85 in August.
