The Georgia state championships were held this past weekend. The son of a friend of mine coaches the boy's team at Jenkins County High in rural south Georgia. They are in Class A, the smallest classification and are not what would be called a wealthy school. In fact they do not even have a track! So they practice by running around the football field and parking lots.
Class A has been won by Landmark Christian for the last 7 years in a row. Landmark is a very wealthy private school in Atlanta. Evander Holyfield sends his children there. They not only have a track, but enough money to bring in coaches from out of town and have week long practice sessions at out of town get aways.
So you can guess where this story is headed. Yes, Jenkins pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Georgia high school sports history. In the final event of the meet, the 4X400, Jenkins' anchor runner took the baton and ran down Landmark's anchor runner to win the state championship.
Landmark has scored over 100 points in past state meets but this years score was Jenkins 69 and Landmark 59. This was a classic David beats Goliath story and we are very proud of the Jenkins guys. Very nice. That's always been a controversy in Oregon HS sports, where Jesuit HS is consistantly dominant due to their excellent facilities and funding and their ability to recruit (which Public schools cannot). It's always an extra special feeling to beat them...

I'll tell you what, if you aren't a believer in God, just look at the track and field results! You've got Landmark Christian in Georgia kicking butt, Jesuit High School in Oregon, a similar school where I grew up... and then just look at Division II college results... can I say Abilene Christian enough times? _________________ Jason Kotenko

Both of my sisters have attended a year of Catholic school now, and neither for religious reasons...

Chapter 2
Jenkins High is strong again this year and Landmark Christian is out for revenge. Tuesday I met my old friend in Savannah to watch Jenkins in the Regional Championships. It was hot and sunny and the sand gnats were biting everything in sight. Jenkins scored 220 points and the second place team scored 50.
The state meet is still 3 weeks away. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

I'd call that dominance.

Well the state meet was last weekend. Jenkins High had the high point athlete last year...he won the 100, 200 and long jump. This year he started the meet by winning the long jump and in the process tearing his ACL.
The rest of the team came together though and put out a great effort. Once again the team championship came down to the 4X400. Jenkins needed a top two finish to win it all and they had the state 400 meter champ running the anchor leg. Unfortunately he got the baton in 7th place. He was able to pick up 4 places to finish 3rd and Jenkins took 2nd place just two points behind Jefferson, the host school. The traditional powerhouse, Landmark Christian, was two points back in third.
The Jenkins girls also took 2nd in their meet finishing behind the Landmark girls. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Ouch. Gutsy effort, at any rate.
