Symmonds rocks at the Oregon Twilight. Blasts past McGrath with 130 to go to win the mile in 4:03.85. McGrath at 4:05.28. Galen Rupp 3rd in the 3K at 8:14 flat. Great meet!! Thumbs Up

I figured Symmonds probably didn't lead until the last lap, but wow, a 1.5 second margin of victory with that late of a kick. Surprised

For those of you less familiar with the name than is Paul, Nick Symmonds is the Willamette U. freshman I've mentioned previously. 9-time HS state champ from Idaho, including the quadruple crown (800, mile, 2 mile, and 4x400) his Junior and Senior years. Ran a very solid XC season last fall, but had a knee injury coming into track and missed the first couple meets. Opened the season with a 4:03 or so 1500m, then blitzed a 1:51.18 school record 800m, winning by 2+ seconds after running middle of the pack through the first lap. Next ran a 3:57 1500m with a huge kick in terrible weather, then a 3:54 with a 12+ second margin of victory. Won a relatively easy 800m/1500m double at conference last week (and was presumably the anchor on the 2nd place mile relay), and then tonight's mile which is equivalent to a sub-3:45 for 1500m. Anyone know what the US Nationals qualifying standard is?! :question:

I saw Jordan Kent won the 200m. First time I've heard his name mentioned this year other than having redshirted in basketball. Was this his first meet for UO?

I've seen Kent run the 100 and long jump. I don't think he has run the 400 at all. Last week ran the 100 in really bad weather in 10.5x with a huge tailwind. Wind for the 200 was legal at +1.4, I believe. Cold out. A front moved in and dropped a lot of rain during the meet. He has long jumped 25-1+ this season, but just ran the 200 today. Good thing, a kid from Lane CC went 24-9 for a PR with wind.

I guess he's been a lot more active than I realized... I imagine we'll be hearing his name a lot down the road in the decathlon, assuming his hoops game doesn't get him to where he considers leaving t&f.

That 200m must have been funny to watch, with 6'5" Kent holding off 6'4" or so Salisbury (another Northwest Conference guy who got a Nationals auto-qualifier in the process). Those guys fill up their lanes.

That's a huge long jump for a NWAAC'er, wow.

Jason Hartmann ran an excellent 8:02 3000m. He looks to be in great shape going into the Pac-10 and NCAA's (10K).

Kennedy seems to be quite the LJ talent. With good coaching I coud see him approaching 26.

Seems to be a bit of a resurgence in the UO Men's program. Thumbs Up

Martin Smith has more than his share of naysayers (I've been on the fence, myself), but the results seem better than Dellinger's last few years.

There is going to be quite a shakeup next year amongst the asst coaches, too. Apparently no one has a job nailed down. It is going to be interesting to see how all this plays out.

I can't disagree with that. It appeared to me that Nick had drawn even with him by the end of the curve. And its not like McGrath tied up. He was still moving well. It's just that Nick's 12 flat 100m Surprised

I think the asst coaching jobs are all being thrown open. Mark Stream has been there nearly as long as Tom and is not sure if he is coming back or even wanted.

To my way of thinking, this presents an interesting recruiting pitch for Matt. If a runner is interested in the team concept, and dual meets during the track season, Willamette has to be considered. You have access to great coaching, an excellent facility, and a high rate education.

Those are definite plusses, but you also have to factor in around $30k per year, no athletic scholarships, and very high academic standards. That's a rather select group that the school appeals to.

From what I know of the UO program through my personal dealings, losing Mark Stream would be big. He seems to have been the organizational backbone of both the women's and men's teams since at least the mid-90's.

Nick Symmonds just won the DIII National Championship in the 1500m, out-kicking a supposedly unbeatable kicker (who is a 4-time national champ and ran at USATF Indoors this past winter). He is also the #2 seed in the 800m final coming up shortly, having run another school record 1:50.48 in prelims yesterday.
