There is an Ultra that starts at the floor of Death Valley in July!! So it appears the 2 big factors are coverage and fluid intake. I hope Dr. Mad Dog sees this and responds because he has a lot of knowledge and experience in these areas, as does Micah. _________________ Paul

Considering that it is January I wonder where you are with a question about the heat. Here in south Georgia the summer can be very hot and humid. The combination of the two makes it a real double whammy.
I have run in the middle of the day with the temp over 90 and humidity over 80 but not for a long run. If I am running in those conditions I keep it under 5 miles. For my long runs in the summer I start in the mornings when the temp and humidity are in the 70's. Even then it can get uncomfortable. And there are some weekends when I follow the run with a couple of hours of pushing the lawn mower in the heat.
The key to dealing with the heat is to aclimate gradually and drink lots and lots and lots and lots of fluids. I carry a water bottle in the summer on any run lasting over 30 minutes and I replenish with a sports drink after any run lasting over an hour. And I drink water constantly during the day whether I am running or not.
If there is shade on your course, get in it. If there are water sprinklers run through them. I have even asked people with water hoses to spray me as I run by.
The main thing though is to monitor you body at all times. Learn the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and if you have the least bit of suspicion that you are feeling them, then STOP
Good luck with your running and don't be shy about letting us know how you are doing....none of the rest of us are.
Micah...in south Georgia...waiting for the summer. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

I've found that to be the single most important thing. Of course, I stay well hydrated year-round (Paul can attest to that!), so that is never really a factor for me.

I've found the key to running in the heat is avoiding running in the heat What I mean is, during the hottest months of the year I always do my best to run in the morning usually before about 9:00 when it starts to heat up and in the evening right before or as the sun is setting.
If you have to run in the heat then I second what's already been said, acclaimate gradually and get plenty of fluids. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Thanks for your replies!! I'm in Australia and that particular day was 40 (celcius) I think translates to around 110 fahrenheit. No way I was running that day...just trying to convince my husband that only a crazy person would |

It is only to hot to run when your body cannot maintain enough hydration while running and you are easily getting tired from running. Just my opinion. _________________ Signing off for now
