Paul, you have been sand bagging. Now if I knew your exact ages we could run it through the age graded table and see how the times compare to open times. And sorry Dan, but I think Paul has you when the age grade is figured in.

Coincidently, my exact age is the same as this thread, except in years instead of hours.
Noah, a friend of Dan's who is quite a good runner, and a year ahead of Dan from High School, said I might place pretty high in the final points if I can run all of the Winter Series XC races, just based on volume. They have a Masters division for those of us over 40.

As far as sandbagging, all my races have been at distances I'm probably not suited for at this point. I fall more in the 5K 10K range, and I've run 15K and 12K. I have been doing my 800 repeats at 6:40 pace or better, and my 1200's at 7:00, but what I would like to do would be something like 2 X 2400 (1 1/2 M) in 11 minutes with a 2 minute rest. That should teach me something about lactate tolerance.

What do you think, Dan, Micah, RG ??

I'm not terribly fond of intervals over a mile. Once you get beyond that, my feeling is you might as well just extend it and make it a tempo run.

If you follow Noah's advice, we'll definitely have some race results to keep an eye on this fall and winter.

Also, I agree with Dan. If your intervals get that long go ahead and go to tempos. Many years ago when I ran a 3 mile race at 5:57, the main stay of my training was 2 mile runs at just under 6:30 and 4 mile runs at 7:00. It wasn't scientific and it was really just accidental that it worked out that way...but it did work.

I'll be 55 in Feb, just in time to join a new Master's division! (55-59). Micah, you were fast as a pup! Must have been back aways when you were the rookie and had to chase the bad guys into the woods.

I blew my avg mile calc. You were right, Dan. I was at 7:13 avg mile. According to all the major calculators, I should be well under 47 for 10K. I'm already geting butterflies in my stomach!!

I've never been much good at calculating average paces, but I'm pretty good at approximating them on the fly...

47 minutes? I'm expecting to see 44:50 out of you!

I don't think it was officially scored, but the talk on the starting line was of scoring the high schoolers vs. the open runners. Looks like us old farts won that battle 24-34. I just missed a scoring spot, though, being the 1st displacement runner...

If next year's field depth is comparable to this year's, I'll be gunning for around 7th place if all goes well. I'll need to move up that much if I want to stay ahead of Paul.
