Oh, he'll have to run in Europe to make up for it ... Still has bills to pay I'd imagine ... He just looked so lackluster to me .... Was never really in it ... Did not look like the guys who was running 1:43 in Europe last year .... _________________ Conway

I think he's been injured and isn't yet in top shape.

I was also disapointed in Adam Goucher not making the 5K final. I think injuries have just done him in over the years. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Not to sound cynical or anything, but is there any other way for Americans to be when it comes to anything over 400 meters but disappointed ??? I think we need a National Distance Program / Coach !!! And it should be headed by a Sprint coach ... _________________ Conway

No...not a sprint coach...we need a Kenyan coach....follow me here.....
Who are the best distance runners on the planet?
The east Africans...specifically the Kenyans and Ethiopians.
Which American has competed the closest to the east Africans?
Bob Kennedy. He went to Europe and not only did he race against them, he trained with them. He did the same workouts and followed the same training plan. That is when he earned the nickname "The White Kenyan". That is also when he became the only American to go under 13:00 for the 5K.
Who is Americas best 5K/10K runner now?
Meb K. He is American by citizenship but he is Ethiopian by genetics. So why isn't he running at the same level with the rest of the Ethiopians and Kenyans? Could it be because he is running American type distance training instead of east African type training?
Maybe the distance coach we need is one who knows the "Kenyan" approach and has the credentials to motivate our runners to follow it.
Coach Kennedy? _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

The Kenyans are coached by Europeans...
Regarding Meb, Abdi, or anyone of the like, you can't really make a comparison to what their former compatriots do and conclude the relative merits of training. Too small a sample pool. For all we know, Meb is a very average talent back home and is known here simply because he excelled against lesser competition.

Its official - K-nakker is going to run the 1500 !!! I'm hoping his entry will help pick the pace up a bit as now we will have two guys that have run 3:32 )or better) in the race ... Would be nice to see a fast, competitive race with a few guys under the A standard ... Instead of a 3:41 wait and kick race ... _________________ Conway

Dan, when I refered to a Kenyan coach I wasn't necessarily suggesting a Kenyan national. I was refering to a coach who utilizes the training methods of the Kenyans. From the articles I have read the difference in their way and ours is the increased volume of high intensity work. Not just lots of mileage and not just fast intervals. But the combination of longer runs at a very fast pace.
Meb's talent may be average for an Ethiopian. But then again it may be that his talent hasn't been fully realized because he isn't maxing out in training.
The bottom line is that Kennedy (to my knowledge) is the only American to run with the Kenyans and he did it after training their way. To me that is a clue. Maybe our distance runners need to look at that. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Wariner looked great last night. Conway, did you get up there to see it? From the perspective of the TV it didn't look like he was laboring too much at the end. Do you think he could have gone faster? With that being the fastest time in the world this year what is your prediction? Sure thing for a medal?
The only surprise in the 1500 was the abscence of K'nacher. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Wariner looked awesome ... He had more in reserve I think .... Once he was out front and knew they weren't coming he seemed to just relax and run it in ... Awesome talent ... I've been saying for a while that he could be the next sub 44 guy ... I am convinced of it ... He is just tapping his potential ... I don't think he will do it at the Games though ... Mostly because I don't think there is anyone that can push him to it ... He's still just running to win ... Maybe next year he'll realize how good he is and begin to run more to run fast, knowing he is better than his competition ... _________________ Conway

Any thoughts on who should coach the squad?

Wow, there's some serious running taking place in the first round of the men's 200. Good to see Mo opting not to run it.
