Ha! Well, it just seems strange that I was running so slow yesterday for a pulse of 165, yet ran out of lungs today before I ever got above 163... at least till I was warmed up.

I wonder if there's such a thing as being a natural "overstrider" in an effort to keep pulse lower. Taking the proper stride length with a quicker turnover seems to raise my pulse... but the coach says "do it" so I'm not gonna argue... Guess it is one of those things that takes time to get used to.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see where things go... I always considered heart rate information "nice to know", but never critical... except that I can use it as a guide in real-time to know when I shouldn't push any harder. We'll see what happens over the course of the next year or so.

How do you figure? Please explain--just want to see how others feel about "effort based training" and why.

Just to be clear, I do not view heart rate monitoring and effort based training to be the same thing. They have similiarities, to be sure, but the differences are more significant.

HR is only one of many indicators. Relying on it to tell how hard you can go is pretty meaningless, in my opinion. It may tell you to overdo it sometimes and do too little others.

I kind of agree with Dan. If I'm tired, I pull back. If I'm feeling good, I push forward. I don't need to see a little number on a screen to decide whether or not to push or pull back. I prefer to listen to my brain rather than my heart.

I've never used a HRM so it is hard for me to comment on them. I have read however, that external factors such as the weather can have an effect on the readings. I also know that Benson has had success with them and there have been a lot of runners that swear by them. It is like any other "tool" to improve your running. If it is working then go with it, if it is not then find somethig else.

We are all an experiment of one. (I think George Sheehan said that.)

Well, finally back after a short absence (no internet connection). I'm currently on business in Alabama (actually, I'm taking a course here through late March.)

Last night, I ran my first "hard" run since before knee surgery last September. 2.96 miles per the pedometer in 18:39. Neutral

Guess I won't be setting any course records (14:40)... That's not the time I'd hoped for, but can't complain too much given the situation (been running distance/effort/heart rates since getting back into it last month, following the wise advice of a running coach).

Although I was wearing a heart rate monitor, I made a point to NOT look at the big number in the middle of the display. Probably would have said 178 or more.

Anyhow... just a status report. Will be interested to see if that time goes down over the next few weeks... would like to shave off about 1:39, but that might be a stretch because I was hurting pretty nicely last night...

Hi there, Micah. Yes... most definitely YES. Coach Benson's program is helping. Two years ago, I ran 3.1 miles in 20:45 on a similar course. I ran .1 mile less than that yesterday, 2 minutes faster.

Two years ago, I used my own training program (go hard as I wanted every day, no intervals, no attention to technique/form). Now, I'm recovering from surgery (tendinitis) and am STILL faster. I'm pretty sure his program has made at least 1 minute of difference so far; I've only been running his program for 4 or 5 weeks now.

Hey, if I can be 2 minutes faster than I am now in the next year or so then that's significant. Still not 14:40, but still not too shabby.

Gotta keep nursing that tendinitis... seems to be getting better over time. Some days much better than others.
