I didn't get the feeling Webb could've run with Kipchoge. He looked like he was straining a good deal to maintain with the 2nd pursuit pack, and Eliud broke away pretty early. Matching that may've put Webb over the top and unable to hold on at the end. His post-race comments sort of echoed that.

Actually I didn't want him to try to stay with Eliud ... More to try to draft off him ... About 5 meters or so back ... But hey ... What he did worked ... He fot his PR and ran a hell of a race !!!!!

Webb not only broke the U.S. national record, but brought himself up to another level. Webb has been known as of late as a (metric) mile specialist. However, running the two--mile race, in a long run should benefit him later this year in Helsinki. I hope that he will focus on one race at the time; and that he will not be affraid to be boxed early in a race, but avoid being boxed late in a race. I would like him at least to reach a semifinal. I would be glad, if he gets to the final.
Once in the final, anything is possible.

The record was due to be broken. Was it not the U.S. national record for the last 20 years?

No, he broke Bob Kennedy's record from something like 5-6 years ago.

This is still the continuing development and education of Webb. I think the doubts of just a couple of years ago have made him tougher and I look for great things in the future. And the future may be now!

Not that I know of. NBC guards its broadcast rights relentlessly (think back to the Olympics), whether or not it chooses to actually air the footage.

This is a tough one I admit I was a doubter about how things would go with Webb - no one can deny the talent the kid has I just was not all that convined I guess of the ways he went about developing it. (i have to admit if you didn't already know that I am a U of Michigan Alumnus so that may color it a bit - I don't think so, I would say this an objective point of view but it may be an unconscious thing there)

Anyway I never thought he gave the Michigan thing the proper due diligence and that in order to get results on that level especially when switching coaching methods and philosophies that you have to be in it for the long haul and you should expect the changes to really start happening in the 18 - 24 month range (12 months at the absolute minimum) - Certainly its tough to say now since he has shown some flashes of brilliance last year and most recently so this maybe is the right stuff for Webb - and I hope he continues to improve I will certainly be cheering for him

OK on to the race this is great result for him... I also even the limited coverage that was to be had did not think Webb could have hung with Kipchoge - it would be nice but not in the cards yet I think - What he needs to do now is get in some good races - qualify for Helsinki and get to the finals there!

Coverage - abyssmal - as always they showed more in lave assignments for the 100 than they did of either 800M - its 2 minutes for Christsakes!!!!

I was thinking the same thing Dan its Nike's meet - they pony up the cask for all these amazing athletes to be there - actually from what I have heard put it in people's contracts to come to the meet - you would think they could even do a commercial free thing like they do with the World Cup soccer - Sure keep it to an hour Run the races maybe even a short break in the middle for a few Nike sponsored bits (the bit about Pre sandwiched around two Nike Commercials... why does no one there think of this... it disgusts me to see covereage like that - here goes the two mile - we will be right back - I jumped up screaming...

Webb showed (ironically) that he is very "Pre" like in his mental toughness .... That is the biggest thing that has been lacking in our distance runners .... That and good racing instincts (which is what cost Webb in Athens) ...

To his credit Webb seems even tougher this year ... And smarter ... I think he will do much better in Helsinki this year ...

You didn't get a great feel for it in the broadcast, but Webb was very aggressive in his tactics right from the gun, making sure to put himself in a good position with the leaders the entire time. He was intent on not losing contact, and covered every move made in that 2nd pack throughout the race. Definitely not your typical American distance running.

When you bring the likes of Coe, Bubka, and Quarrie to a meet, you'd sure think it's of high enough importance to twist some arms over at NBC...

It was great fun seeing all those Olympians trotting out on the field!!

I thought Webb ran superbly. It was a bit windy on the field so the times could have been a couple secs faster.

My thoughts on Webb were influenced quite a bit by Chris Lear's book. And just because he went back to train with his HS coach does not mean he trains like he did in HS. It wouldn't surprise me if he did a fair amount of base training early in the season with XC. His indoor meets are nothing to brag about, and he doesn't seem too concerned. I think he is more aerobically conditioned and this is one of the reasons for his range, now. I think he could set the National record at 3K, which is still held by ... Chapa??

A great duel might be Webb and Goucher at 3K.

Where were you seated? I figured you were down there somewhere...

Remember last year how critical I was of Webb's approach to the season, racing hard and often through late winter and spring, and in my opinion peaking way too soon? This year seems to be just the opposite, with him now showing he can run with world class fields (2nd to Lagat in the 1500 in London this week) on a regular basis. I can't believe they didn't see it coming last year, but maybe they thought they were already too deep into the cycle to make a change.

I think we may have discussed this last year. We were wondering if he was trying for a double peak. He was so far ahead of the rest of the U.S. field that he could afford to train right through the Trials.

Oh, I was in section C row 15 & 16 seats 1 & 2. I was also at the State HS Champs. I looked hard for you, but it seems half the teams wear green! Laughing

Both were great meets. I was especially interested in how well the Chinese athletes were prepared.
