WEBB VERSUS RITZ OVER 2-MILES!
It's the matchup American track fans have been waiting for: two of America’s brightest young stars clashing at a distance that finds them meeting in-between their specialities. The burning question: can Alan Webb and his miling speed run away from the endurance of Dathan Ritzenhein? Webb and Ritz will return to Hayward Field on June 4th to race in an event specially crafted to feature these two 22-year-old talents. It’s the Prefontaine Classic 2-Mile.

The last time a 2-Mile was contested in the Pre Classic was 1995, when two other American standouts, Bob Kennedy and Todd Williams, dueled back-and-forth for 8 laps. Kennedy emerged with a then-American Record of 8:14.53, a time which he later improved in Europe to a still-standing 8:11.59 AR.

For Webb and Ritz, Hayward Field has been the site of recent successes. In last year's Bowerman Mile, Alan ran his fastest-ever time of 3:50.83 to win the race. That was the best time by an American in seven years. Just 10 days ago, Ritzenhein set his lifetime best at 5,000 meters of 13:22.23 in the Oregon Twilight Meet, running the last three laps by himself.

To win the 2005 Prefontaine Classic 2-Mile, it will likely take an American Record—or at least the fastest ever run on U.S. soil, Kennedy’s 8:14.53—to even be in the hunt. Defending Pre Classic champion Joseph Koskei of Kenya returns, as well as 3-time meet champion Luke Kipkosgei, also of Kenya. Then add in U.S. Olympic Trials steeple winner Daniel Lincoln, and Olympic Trials 5k runner up Jonathan Riley. Are you ready for the first-ever sub-8:10 race on American soil? That’s better than two sub-4:05 miles back-to-back!

Speaking of heated rivalries, Goucher and Slattery are scheduled to compete tonight in the 1500m at the Willamette Last Chance meet. Wink

My money is on Webb. With his background in cross country I don't think this race is long enough for Ritz to take the kick out of Webb no matter how fast the pace is.

I think I would give the edge to Webb here I just think with the times and effort he has put forward in the early season he looks to be better equipped for this distance especially if it comes down to a kick... That being said this race looks to be run fast and flat out so we shall see

This race just keeps getting better and better - Eliud Kipchoge has been added to the field - lots of Rumours that they have been trying to get Shaheen as well

Who is next? Bekele? Lagat?

Of course NBC will only be showing 1 hours worth of coverage so the 2 mile will get a minute or two while the short sprints will get 20 minutes of coverage and analysis.. grrr

The duel with Ritz never really shaped up, but great racing by Webb right from the get go. I don't want to give anything away before tomorrow's telecast, but there were some very good dramatic (competitively speaking) moments to the meet that hopefully will make it on.

Surprise, surprise, the coverage left me with an extremely empty feeling... At least they didn't waste time with lots of fluff, but talk about losing the drama of the moment with over-editing.

My local NBC affiliate showed Darcy's Wild Side and Discovery for Kids instead of the Pre. Mad

But looking at the results shows a great race for Webb.

I'll never understand why Nike doesn't step up and do whatever's necessary to ensure NBC gives the meet the same treatment afforded to every other sporting event. They only show it in half the country, they cram the broadcast into an hour slot with about 55 minutes of commercials and add insult to injury by rotating a total of about 5 commercials, and any race longer than a lap gets about as much treatment as you'd expect of Sports Center lowlights. The women's 800m and 1500m had some major pileups, but the coverage was such a quick cut-to and away that you got no sense of what happened, where it was in the race, and how it affected the outcome.

First off, the coverage was extremely poor ... Not sure any other sport would allow such mediocre coverage of their sport ... But here we sit begging for more !!!

As for the race itself, I was very proud of Webb ... And I had the feeling that if he had maintained contact earlier he could have gone faster ... Second place in a race of that caliber is AWESOME ... But I honestly think he can go faster ...

Having said that I wish he had run the mile because I think 3:49 was there for him to run !!!
