Below is the field for this Sunday's Wanamaker Mile. It is being buit as a two horse race between Legat and Bekele. Does anyone smell an upset? I don't my $$ is on Legat. My $$ is also on New Mexico's own David Krummenacker in the 800 (he and Ryun are the only men in history to finish a year ranked #1 in the 800 and 1500 in the US).

Bernard Lagat US
Richard Kiplagat KEN
Kenenisa Bekele ETH
Rui Silva POR
Laban Rotich KEN

Does Bekele have any miling credentials? I know Geb turned in some blazing Indoor miles, but I'm not sure Bekele has quite his leg speed.

Bekele just completed a tune up for the Wanamaker Mile by running the 1500 at the BW-Bank-Meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany on January 29th but I haven't been able to find the results.

Bekele pulled out of the Germany race stating that he had a slight leg injury he will be making his mile debut at the Millrose Games.

Hard to promote it as a major showdown when one guy specializes at the distance and the other is a complete unknown at it. Neutral

While I know the whole race is probably being overpromoted (as much as a distance race can be overpromoted in the US, through internet news and message boards) When Bekele says that he thinks he can run in the low 3:50s we have to respect him. He is one of the greatest runners ever and therefor gets a special "pass" on his statement until the Garden track and Legat or Silva prove him wrong.

1 Bernard Lagat USA 3:56.85 1500m 3:39.4
2 Kenenisa Bekele ETH 4:01.57
3 Rui Silva POR 4:01.79
4 Richard Kiplagat KEN 4:02.01
5 Laban Rotich KEN 4:06.78
6 James Thie GBR 4:08.43

I stand by my statement that the hype was unwarranted, even for someone of Bekele's stature. There has to be a precedent...

And what's with lil' Coghlan running near last, barely under 4:30 for the mile? Did he try leading the thing and just blew up? Most of the times look pretty slow for the meet. You'd think they had bad weather or something. Rolling Eyes

The problem is USATF has NO idea how to market the sport and won't listen to anyone ... They thought that by marketing two champions competing against each other that that was the way to go ....

But it was totally unwarranted ... Bekele is great at what he does but that was a stretch ... I think they simply assumed that he would be like Geb who COULD run them all !!!!

Well, he's a 5'3" Ethiopian, and Geb was (and presumably still is) a 5'3" Ethiopian, so how could they possibly fare differently???
