|

I just learned of a new tool for seeing who all's stealing your content...
http://www.copyscape.com/
Ran a few of my web design pages through it and found a supposed web host/merchant provider blatantly ripping off my free tutorials. Ran some Run-Down pages through and found quite a bit of unattributed copying, such as:
http://www.copyscape.com/?q=http%3A%2F%2Frun-down.com%2Ftips%2F
And people wonder why I say there's no honor on the internet. No wonder I lose more money than I make some months due to online fraud...
If you suddenly stop hearing from me one day, it probably means I packed up shop and found a nice cave to live in...

wow Dan, that really sucks. None of those people even mentioned who originally wrote it or linked to run-down.com. :t-: |

I agree, plus, it makes you wonder how much original content is actually on the net. _________________ Paul

I stopped looking after a couple pages, because I really didn't want to bang my head against a brick wall chasing people down that don't give a $#@!.

Wow ... Is there nothing that can be done as far as reporting to someone, potential law suits or the like ??? _________________ Conway

Sure, you could sic legal hounds on them, but what are the damages and how likely are content thieves to be able to pay? Many hosts turn the other cheek to clients partaking in such actions.
I regularly change image directories on this site because so many people link directly to them and slurp up the bandwidth I'm paying for, so I stick the lazy, inconsiderate bastards with broken images... Same for people copying the code for whole pages of my running links directory, which points to an on-site redirect URL.
It's a losing battle for the most part to put much time or effort into regulating. It's stuff like this why I'm so staunchly against anonymity on the internet. The environment is just way too conducive to theft, fraud, and general immaturity and lack of morality.

It seems to almost be a matter of size. For instance, you see a lot of stuff attributed to Galloway's site. Much of Dan's tips are unique, and I'm assuming he wouldn't mind people borrowing them, but it would be very nice to receive the credit for them. Steve Bennett references Run-Down in his e-book Maintaining Form During Middle Distance Running. _________________ Paul

Yeah, what are the odds of another person thinking the same way as me?

I wasn't thinking about it that way, but now that you mention it, I do see your point!! _________________ Paul

Yeah … I don't like the total anonymity thing … Theft … Coercing of kids … A whole lot of reasons why I think you need an ID just as you do "on the street" …
Didn't realize you had to "move things around" so much just to try to maintain your site ... _________________ Conway

I at least got a very apologetic letter last night from the pres. of the web hosting company that had my stolen tutorials. Said they had hired someone to put together tutorials and assumed the guy had turned in his own work... He's since been fired for other reasons and they took down the tutorials upon receiving my notice.

Don't get so excited just yet ... I just got hit with another $50 fraudulent order this morning. Business has gotten so bad, that was my first software sale of the month, and it wasn't even legit.

Not for me. Usually strongest early to mid and then drops off toward the end.
